    Key facts

    • With its strong connections to the different Gaeltachtaí of Cork, Waterford and Kerry, the Department of Modern Irish is uniquely positioned to maximise student potential in the spoken language.
    • The range of research and teaching interests of the staff of the Department of Modern Irish, from medieval to modern times, from Irish manuscripts to modern literature, is unique in Irish third-level education.

Ionad na Gaeilge Labhartha, in Áras Uí Rathaille, possesses a fine collection of tapes and videos on Irish matters. The Boole Library, in addition to the Irish books in the Humanities section, holds a special collection of original Irish manuscripts, microfilms and rare books. Trips during term to Dún Chíomháin, UCC’s house near Ballyferriter in the West Kerry Gaeltacht, add a special social and cultural aspect to the students’ academic course.

Scholarships are available to students to enable them to spend longer periods in the Gaeltacht during the holidays. A vibrant Irish-language society, An Chuallacht Ghaelach, organises dramas, debates and various social activities, the annual highlight of which is the week-long Spraoi Cois Laoi in the first term.

As well as acquiring the oral and written skills essential to any language degree, students who choose Gaeilge/Irish as part of their Arts programme will enjoy unique cultural enrichment. You will develop informed opinions on Irish life and civilisation through an acquaintance with the various sources of information on our heritage and a familiarity with Irish literature from early times to the present.

The Departments of Irish are uniquely positioned to provide an insight into the ancestral language, literature and culture of Ireland. For the students it can be a genuinely satisfying encounter: there is the sense of working in an original way with material that closely concerns themselves.

    Cúrsai Staidéir
Tá idir theanga agus litríocht i gceist i gcúrsaí na Gaeilge. Is í an Ghaeilge féin an meán teagaisc. Bíonn ranganna beaga ar siúl ina ndírítear ar scríobh na teanga.
