    About

    The proposed 12-credit Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) will prepare students to assume technology leadership roles in the use of Advanced GIS and Spatial Analytics, primarily within the allied design professions including Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Planning and Engineering, but also extending to more traditional spatial analysis roles. GIS professionals must demonstrate mastery of a broad spectrum of advanced geospatial skill sets and knowledge bases to plan and lead in the use of geospatial technology for projects related to the built environment. The mission of the Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is to provide students with a broad-based, practice-oriented proficiency in advanced geospatial technology and spatial analytics.

    The following are Core (required) and remaining (elective) courses for the Certificate, although course substitutions are possible at the discretion of the Program Director. The Certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) requires the completion of a total of 12 credits (4 courses):

    Core Courses for the Certificate (required courses):

    • GEOD-610      Introduction to GIS * - 3 CR
    • GEOD-615      Advanced GIS for Landscape Analysis - 3 CR
    • GEOD-617      Advanced GIS for Urban Planning and Development - 3 CR

    Choose remaining course(s) from the following:

    • GEOD-625      Internet GIS Tech for Design and Development - 3 CR
    • GEOD-600      3D Modeling for Geodesign - 3 CR

    * Note – for students with prior GIS experience, this Intro GIS course may be waived at the discretion of the Program Director and another course substituted.

    Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Certificate is a STEM designated program (CIP Code 11.0804). 

     

    Program Highlights

    In this highly innovative program, next generation designers of the built environment learn through a combination of advanced geospatial technologies and sustainable design practices. You will work on real projects in a highly-collaborative fast-paced, hands-on learning environment. Upon graduation, you will have the skills necessary to address complex design and planning problems with powerful geospatial visualization and analysis tools that foster meaningful collaboration among other build environment design professionals.

    • Work with state-of-the-art geospatial 3D technologies to model complex urban environments.
    • Gain hands-on experience working on real projects for real clients.
    • Prepare to become leaders and innovators in solving 21st century design and planning challenges.

    Students who have taken coursework outside of the United States should submit a course-by-course academic credential evaluation from a National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) member credentialing organization. Applicants who do not have a NACES evaluation are required to submit official transcripts, along with an official English translation, to Jefferson for review. Thomas Jefferson University reserves the right to outsource student academic credentials to our NACES member partner for evaluation.

    Supporting Materials

    The Admissions Committee emphasizes a holistic review process that examines the entirety of an applicant's academic aptitude, motivation, problem-solving skills, leadership potential and life experiences. Admission decisions are individualized to the specific attributes of the applicant.
    • Transcripts: Submit official undergraduate and graduate transcripts from all regionally accredited institutions you have attended and/or from which you earned credit. Official transcripts must be sent electronically by the institution to [email protected] or mailed to the address above.     • Personal Statement: Submit a statement of purpose outlining your interest in the program, how the course of study relates to your desired career path, and your academic and job-related experiences that are relevant to the program.
    • Letters of Recommendation: Submit three letters of reference that provide insight into your academic and/or professional competence. References from college or university faculty members or professional sources are accepted. You may request recommendations through your MyJefferson account.
    • Résumé: A current professional résumé is required.
