    German and Portuguese (MA)

    About

    Introducing MA German and Portuguese

This flexible joint honours programme gives you the opportunity to study two different European languages in their diverse cultural contexts.

With a long history of cultural achievement, migration and diaspora, German and Portuguese are your gateway to a great many countries and cultures in Europe, South America and Africa.

Most of our graduates started as complete beginners in Portuguese. Through intensive language study, including a year abroad, you will have the opportunity to acquire the same level of spoken and written Portuguese as you gain in German, which you can start at beginner or more advanced level.

In addition to your language classes, you will explore aspects of German-language and Portuguese-speaking (lusophone) cultures. Courses cover literature, cinema, history, politics, and languages in themed and comparative contexts.

    Why Edinburgh

As a world-leading festival city, Edinburgh is a fantastic place to study European languages in their global cultural context.

We are unique in Scotland in offering students a full academic year abroad within the four-year honours programme, regardless of whether you spend the year studying or working.

Our programme is flexible. In Years 1 and 2, as well as your core subjects, you will choose option courses from a wide range of disciplines. You will specialise as you progress through your honours years, choosing from a range of courses that match your own interests, expertise and employability needs.

When you graduate, you will have the combination of a broad cultural education in the arts and humanities, and specialist knowledge of two widely-used languages, valued by employers worldwide.

    Career

    Skills and experience

Studying languages to degree level demonstrates that you are a good communicator, and someone open to other cultures and new ideas – what employers value as Intercultural Competence.

Beyond the language skills you will develop, you will also gain a nuanced understanding of diverse cultures and societies.

Graduating with a four-year Master of Arts degree from the University of Edinburgh shows intellectual maturity, resilience, and flexibility.

The skills you will be able to demonstrate to employers when you graduate include the ability to:

    • understand, analyse and articulate complex issues and concepts
    • manage your time to meet deadlines on different types of projects
    • work independently and as part of a group

    Opportunities across sectors

Our programmes are an excellent primer for a range of careers, especially those that place a premium on thinking that is both disciplined and imaginative.

Within the private, public, not-for-profit, and for-benefit sectors, previous graduates have gone on to work in:

    • business, finance and commerce
    • communications, marketing, advertising and public relations
    • education, outreach, advocacy and training
    • journalism, broadcasting and media
    • leisure, tourism and travel

    Local and global opportunities

With increasing migration in response to changing global dynamics, there is demand for our graduates in Scotland, the UK and abroad.

Wherever you are based in the world, the ability to communicate in these two major languages, and to understand the cultures to which they open doors, will make you stand out.

If you are keen to work abroad, it’s good to know that more people speak German as their first language than any other in Europe. An official language of seven European countries and provinces, German also plays an important role in communications in many other countries, particularly in central and eastern Europe. It is the third most popular foreign language taught worldwide.

One of the world's top ten most widely spoken languages, Portuguese is estimated to have around 220 million native speakers (260 million total speakers). From Europe to South America and Africa, it is an official language in ten countries, including:

    • Portugal
    • Brazil
    • Mozambique
    • Angola
