    The binational masters programme in German as a Foreign Language: Estudios interculturales de lengua, literatura y cultura alemanas, offered by Leipzig University and the Universidad de Guadalajara in Mexico, is a consecutive, research-oriented programme of study.

    The masters degree programme comprises compulsory content from the fields of linguistics/applied linguistics, intercultural studies, intercultural literary studies and didactics/methodology. Vocational key qualifications are among the integral components of the programme.

    The programme is intended to prepare students for academic-based professions and taking into account the requirements, latest research findings and current developments to equip them with the necessary specialist knowledge, skills and methods in such a way that they are able to conduct independent scholarly, systematic work, think for themselves and act responsibly. During the programme, the aim is to develop academic competence in such a way that it is of use after completing the MA and can be deepened through individual experience and continuing education. The programme is designed to prepare students for work in a wide range of professional fields, with a special emphasis on imparting knowledge and expertise that will enable them to work in the field of academic and cultural exchange between the German and Spanish-speaking worlds.

    The masters programme in German as a Foreign Language: Estudios interculturales de lengua, literatura y cultura alemanas ends with a further academic degree in the form of a double degree, conferring the titles of Master of Arts” (Leipzig University) and maestra­a (Universidad de Guadalajara).

    The masters programme in German as a Foreign Language: Estudos interculturais de la­ngua, literatura e cultura alemas is a consecutive, research-oriented programme of study. Students complete two semesters at Leipzig University and two semesters at the Universidade Federal do Parana¡ (UFPR) in Curitiba. The masters degree programme comprises compulsory content from the fields of linguistics, cultural studies, and didactics/methodology. In this regard, the programme combines the strengths of the two partner universities: in Leipzig these include linguistics and applied linguistics, didactics, cultural studies and test research. In Curitiba they include intercultural literature and translation studies as well as contrastive cultural studies. Vocational key qualifications are also among the integral components of the programme. The programme is intended to prepare students for academic-based professions and taking into account the requirements, latest research findings and current developments to equip them with the necessary specialist knowledge, skills and methods in such a way that they are able to conduct independent scholarly, systematic work, think for themselves and act responsibly. In particular, students should be enabled to critically assess, consider more carefully and apply basic theories and methods of the subject. Students will receive the opportunity to further develop skills for the independent formulation and handling of complex scientific questions, including in a comparative and interdisciplinary context, combined with a capacity for intercultural communication and for the application of techniques of scholarly work, including research, oral and written presentation. The binational masters programme is a unique way of qualifying students for work in the educational or cultural field in Portuguese-speaking countries. The masters programme in German as a Foreign Language: Estudos interculturais de la­ngua, literatura e cultura alemas ends in a Master of Arts double degree, which is awarded by both the Brazilian and German universities.

    Entry Requirements

    • Usually an academic degree in the subjects German as a foreign language, German, German language and literature, German studies, linguistics, foreign language pedagogy, literary studies or related subjects;
    • knowledge of German at C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages;
    • students of partner universities who intend to complete a period of study at Leipzig University from a higher semester of study onwards, must prove their knowledge of German at C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages when commencing their studies at Leipzig University;
    • knowledge of Spanish at B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (reading comprehension);
    • knowledge of Spanish at B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (other skills).

    The Faculty will check whether the above requirements have been met and then issue an official notification. This serves as proof that the candidate meets the relevant admission requirements

    How to Apply

    1. Checking your documents

    If you wish to participate in the German course to prepare for studying, you will need to have what is known as a“direct”higher education entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung, HZB),i.e.one that is valid for German universities.

    Please check in the databasewhether your school and university certificates entitle you to study in Germany.

    • Do you meet the requirements for the German course and does your previous education mean that you have a direct HZB? Then apply for the German course!
    • Do your documents contain an “indirect” HZB, i.e. one that is not valid for German universities? Please check the information about preparing for your studiesto find out how to apply to the Studienkolleg Sachsen.

    2. Confirmation document

    Refugees may only apply free of charge to the German course to prepare for studying if they have a document confirming that they have sought advice. This is called a Beratungsbestätigung. In order to apply, please emailus a scan of your residence title and indicate which degree programmeyou would like to study. Please note that we cannot accept any responsibility for personal documents you send to us by email. Alternatively, you can also send us a copy of your documents by post. We will then send you a personalised confirmation document, which you will need to upload when you apply.

    3. Apply through uni-assist

    • Then please send certified copies of your application documents (in the original language along with a German or English translation) by post directly to uni-assist:

    4. Admission and entrance test

    Once uni-assist has successfully checked your documents, you will receive a letter of admission forthe German course from mid-August 2021. This will be sent to you via the AlmaWeb study portal. When you have been admitted, you can expect to be invited to an entrance test in September. The course starts in October 2021.
