    About

The German Empire, the First World War, the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich, the division of Germany after the Second World War, the reunification in 1989, and finally the refugee crisis since 2015 – in this seminar, we will examine the changes that Germany underwent from the founding of the Empire in 1871 until the present time. We will focus primarily on political, social, and cultural processes – as they were perceived and described by artists, writers, and filmmakers at the time – and on Berlin as a colourful iridescent kaleidoscope of historical change. Excursions to museums and places of documentation will offer the opportunity to experience the developments of the country in its present and historical dimensions and to deepen acquired impressions and knowledge. We will visit the Alte Nationalgalerie (paintings of Romanticism), the Reichstag, the Deutscher Widerstand Memorial, the Tempelhof Airport (built during National Socialism, the former centre of the "Berliner Luftbrücke" and since 2015 refugee accommodation), and the Kreuzberg neighbourhood. You will take a mandatory placement test on the first day. In the mornings: four credit hours of German class a day (one credit hour = 45 minutes): a total of 80 credit hours In the afternoons: academic lessons two or three times per week: a total of 20 credit hours seminars, workshops, and trips related to the history, urban development, and culture of Berlin Components of the language lessons include: grammar conversation writing listening and reading comprehension pronunciation literature
