German - Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE)

The German Subject Knowledge Enhancement course blends self-directed online learning with live video conferencing. Scheduled live tutorials are held weekly online in small groups. These are led by a tutor who is an experienced specialist teacher of your study language and will help you expand your language skills, particularly for classroom contexts.

The online interactive language system has an excellent international reputation, providing comprehensive immersion-based language learning for you to access according to your own schedule and even beyond the SKE course. Mobile integration provides the flexibility to study wherever and whenever you wish, both online and offline.

The software is designed to help you gain confidence in the building blocks of language by practicing vocabulary, phrases and grammar in real-world contexts, reinforced through repetition and enhanced by multimedia resources. Exercises cover all four linguistic skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking, including proprietary speech recognition software which will enable you to adjust your accent and pronunciation.

The focus of the SKE course is on language acquisition for everyday situations and is suitable for those starting at a wide range of language levels, from Beginner to Advanced. The software content and assessment are aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), providing a recognised standard of achievement.

All applicants for undergraduate programmes will need a minimum English level of IELTS or equivalent 6.0 overall, with no less than 6.0 in writing and no less than 5.5 in all other bands. Some programmes require 6.5/7.0 – please contact the International Office if you are unsure of your course requirement.

For postgraduate entry all applicants will need a minimum of IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in writing and no less than 5.5 in all other bands or equivalent. Some courses have a higher requirement – please contact the International Office if you are unsure of your course requirement.

For International Foundation entry all applicants will need a minimum of IELTS 5.0 or equivalent, with no less than 5.0 in writing and no less than 4.0 in all other bands.

If you have taken an IGCSE exam in English and have a Grade C, this will also usually be acceptable for most undergraduate courses.

We are also able to consider some non-UK English qualifications for entry. The International Admissions Team will advise if they are able to accept your English language qualification once you have applied.
