About

Overview

This part-time programme gives teachers across primary, post-primary and special education contexts the skills to recognise autistic students’ educational strengths and needs and help them thrive.

Gain in-depth skills to support autistic students
Modules are delivered in-person and online, and you’ll get the chance to visit a classroom setting to observe what you’ve learned put into practice. You’ll also get 15 days’ allowance to attend the course (with substitution covered) and all travel expenses are paid.

Once you graduate, you will have a deeper understanding of autism and evidence-informed skills to help you tailor your planning and teaching to provide better educational opportunities to autistic children and young adults. You’ll also be a great candidate for the Master’s of Education in Autism if you choose to pursue further studies.

General Entry Requirements

Please review the Department of Education Circular for 2025 here in English. The 2025 Irish version will be available shortly, the 2024 verion is available for reference here in Irish.

This programme is for registered teachers who currently:

Hold a post funded by the Department of Education.
Work in recognised primary, post-primary, or special school settings.
Work with autistic students or will be working with autistic students for the duration of the programme.

The programme is designed to assist teachers to effectively support the holistic educational development of their autistic students. Therefore, applicants must hold a teaching role, supporting autistic students.

English Program Requirements

DCU Institute of Education

In the case of all applications, evidence MUST be provided of competence in the English Language. The list below indicates the minimum standards in the English language, which should be met for entry to the postgraduate taught programmes in the DCU Institute of Education.

EXAMINATION	MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
IELTS ACADEMIC	Overall score 6.5 or above, with a minimum of 6.0 in all components. *Scores must be achieved in one sitting.
TOEFL	Overall score 580.
CBTOEFL	Overall score 237.
TOEFL iBT	Overall score 92 or above.
English Test for Academic and Professional Purposes (ETAPP)	C1
Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CAP)	Postgraduate: Overall score of 180 with a minimum of 169 in all components.
Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE)	Postgraduate: Overall score of 180 with a minimum of 169 in all components.
Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic)	63 with a minimum of 59 in all components.
Duolingo	Duolingo will be accepted with a minimum score of 120 and a score of at least 110 in each subscore. Please ensure the verification link is provided when submitting this evidence and you share your results with DCU.
