Graphic Design for Health Care University Graduate Certificate

About

Gain a recognised, professional qualification which can lead to Registered Medical Illustrator status. The Graduate and Postgraduate Certificates in Graphic Design in Health Care are accepted as accredited qualifications by the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS) for application onto their Accredited Register, and by the Institute of Medical Illustrators (IMI) for application as a Professional Member.

This course provides continuing professional development, including specialist knowledge and skills, for people who are already in work as medical illustrators.

It forms part of the Medical Illustration Programme of work-based, distance-learning awards offered by the School of Creative Arts and Engineering.

Important:

This course is only open to those who work in a UK-based, Medical Illustration department and are supported by their employers.

Applications can only be considered for applicants already employed as a Graphic Designer in a healthcare setting.

On successful completion of study, we will issue the following award: University Graduate Certificate Graphic Design for Health Care

This award is based on learning through work-based assignments, so it is really only suitable for those who are employed in a healthcare environment that gives them access to the clinical situations, specialist equipment and workplace supervisors necessary for the successful completion of those assignments.

You will study:

the legal and ethical issues encountered in medical illustration
anatomy and physiology
computer skills for medical illustration

you will also carry out practical assignments in:

black and white and colour illustration
web design
teaching poster production
brochure design

Learning support

In addition to the excellent support you will receive from your course teaching team, our central Academic Skills team provides group and one-to-one help to support your learning in a number of areas. These include study skills (including reading, note-taking and presentation skills); written English (including punctuation and grammatical accuracy); academic writing (including how to reference); research skills; critical thinking and understanding arguments; and revision, assessment and examination skills (including time management).

Entry Requirements

Undergraduate

Undergraduate (bachelors) degrees

To apply for an undergraduate (bachelors) degree you need one of the following qualifications:

Community College Diploma / Associate Degree with a minimum grade GPA of 2.5

International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma with 28 points overall
Successful completion of a relevant International Foundation Year from a recognised UK Institution

Integrated masters and two-year accelerated degrees

To apply for an integrated masters or two-year accelerated degree you need one of the following qualifications:

Community College Diploma / Associate Degree with a minimum grade of 2.8

International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma with 30 points overall
Successful completion of a relevant International Foundation Year from a recognised UK Institution

English Program Requirements

The majority of our undergraduate bachelor degree courses require a minimum overall IELTS score of 6.0, with 5.5 in reading, writing, speaking and listening. However, we also accept a wide range of qualifications from around the world. The following qualifications are acceptable for most of our Bachelor degree courses.

For Graphic Designers for Health Care, the Graduate Certificate award constitutes evidence that you have undertaken this professional development course and that you have achieved all of its learning outcomes. It bears witness to the fact that you have learned, and can practise, key professional skills and that you have acquired and critically reflected on a professionally relevant body of knowledge.

The Postgraduate Certificates will provide evidence that you have acquired all of the learning outcomes associated with the Graduate Certificate awards and that you have given additional attention to the more academic, theoretical issues in medical illustration, taking a more questioning, critical and analytical approach to theories, practice-based issues and case studies. This award could also qualify you to progress to a Postgraduate Diploma and, eventually, a Masters qualification if the demand justifies the development of these further awards by the university.
