About

The Great Western Four+ Doctoral Training Partnership (GW4+ DTP) comprises the University of Bristol, University of Bath, Cardiff University, University of Exeter, British Antarctic Survey, British Geological Survey, Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, the Natural History Museum and Plymouth Marine Laboratory.

The partnership provides a multidisciplinary training environment for postgraduate students in NERC sciences. Due to the nature of the funding, this programme is open primarily to UK students. EU student eligibility is still to be confirmed. There will be a limited number of studentships available to international students.

This NERC-funded doctoral training partnership programme offers studentships for 42 months within three research themes: Dynamic Earth, Living World and Changing Planet.

As part of your PhD studies, you will be offered training that equips you with a range of skills for future employment in many different working environments. You will be expected to attend training during your PhD and are encouraged to take up work placements. Details of training can be found at www.nercgw4plus.ac.uk.

PhD projects are available in earth and environmental science topics within the Schools of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth Sciences and Geographical Sciences. New projects are advertised annually from October on each school's website:

Entry Requirements

Postgraduate applicants

Applicants will need to meet the English language requirements for their chosen course. Different courses need different levels of language skills, referred to as ‘profiles’. The required profile will be shown on the course page. Find out more about our English language profiles.

To be considered for admission to a master's degree programme at the University of Bristol, the minimum requirement for entry is an undergraduate (bachelor’s) degree that is equivalent to a UK upper second-class degree (also known as a 2:1).

Applicants who hold a four-year bachelor's degree from a prestigious university with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or 73% will be considered for admission to a master's degree (the requirement will depend on your undergraduate university).
Applicants who hold a good master's degree from a prestigious university will be considered for admission to PhD study.

English Program Requirements

You need to achieve required levels of English to qualify for a place on your chosen course/programme.

Different courses/programmes need different levels of language skills. We refer to these skill levels as ‘profiles’. The profile for your chosen course/ programme is shown on the course/programme page.

English language proficiency tests should have been obtained within two years of the start date of your programme/course.

If you are from, or have studied in, an English-speaking country, you may be exempt from the need to provide additional evidence of your English language ability.

Applying

You do not need to have reached the required level before you apply.

We will look at your academic qualifications and decide what offer we will make you. If you haven’t yet reached the required English level, we will give you a target grade to meet as part of your offer.

If you have the required level

If you have the required level, you must include it in your application. You do not need to do anything else. If you are from an English-speaking country as defined by UK Visas and Immigration, then you are considered to have the required level.

If you have started but not completed the required level

If you haven’t reached the required level in English language for your course/programme, you will be given a target grade in your offer.

You will need to provide a valid English language qualification showing you have met the required target grade.

If you don’t have the required level

If you don’t have the required level you could try one of the following:

Taking a pre-sessional language course offered by the University
Taking an IELTS Academic test
Taking a different course in your home country which qualifies (see the list under the profile)
Re-sitting the language tests in your home country to reach the required level

How to Apply

1. Find a programme
Search the postgraduate online prospectus to find your programme. Read the admissions statement for information on entry requirements, the application process, and supporting documents required.
2. Start your application
You can either select Apply now on the programme's prospectus page or head straight to the online application portal.

New applicants will need to create a new account. Returning applicants can use their existing username and password. You can save your application and return to continue it later.

Tip: Make sure you enter your details as they appear on your passport or legal documents.
Tip: Enter a current email address that will be valid beyond the end of the academic year, as we will use this to contact you about your application.

Important: If an agent's email address is on the application form, we will not be able to contact you directly about your application. We can only communicate with the email address on the application form.
3. Complete your application
The application form contains multiple sections you need to complete before you can submit your application. You can see each section on the left of the screen.

Uploading documents:
Check the admissions statement for the documents you need to support your application.
Upload your references to the Referees section if you already have them. Or, tell us your referee's email address and we will email them to submit the reference online.

Documents must:
- include the file extension appropriate to its format,
- not be password protected,
- not contain macros.
4. Check your application
Check each section in your application carefully. Make sure you have answered all the questions and uploaded all the documents required in the admissions statement for the programme.
5. Submit your application
You may need to pay an application fee before you submit your application. If a programme requires an application fee, it is noted on the first page of the application and in the funding section. You are required to pay this fee to submit your application, or you can request an application fee waiver if you are eligible.

When you submit an application, your responses will become the official property of the University of Bristol and we will base our admission decision on the information you provide.

You will receive an email confirmation of your submission and a link to your applicant portal, where you can track its progress.
