    Hands-on Training is a Central Theme

    The Healthful Living and Fitness Education major is designed for students wanting to enter K-12 teaching in healthful living and fitness education or the health, wellness and fitness industries. You complete core major courses and then choose from one of two specialty options: K-12 Teacher Licensure Specialty or Lifetime Fitness & Health Specialty.

    Fitness and health professionals have a range of opportunities for employment. From corporate settings to health care facilities to high-energy gyms and fitness centers, there is a work environment for all personality types. Many graduates choose to continue their education by pursuing a master's or doctoral degree to advance their knowledge in the field.

    Demonstrate breadth of general knowledge, as well as depth of knowledge in the selected discipline area necessary for effective instructional decision making.

    Adapt instruction to the developmental and learning needs of individuals, including children and adolescents with special needs and students from culturally diverse backgrounds.

    Establish a classroom climate conducive to the learning, social, and emotional needs of children and adolescents and demonstrate effective teaching including positive results for student learning, self-reflection and appropriate professional dispositions.

    Choose appropriate objectives consistent with state and local curriculum guidelines, the learning needs of students, and the standards established by learned societies.

    Use technology to enhance teaching and learning experiences and employ and analyze appropriate assessments and evaluative procedures.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    • Completed online application.
      • Fall Deadline: April 1
      • Spring Deadline: October 15
    • Non-refundable $80 application fee (check or money order in U.S. dollars and drawn on a U.S. bank, payable to UNCW).
    • Official high school (secondary school) transcript, translated into English (translation must be certified).
    • Translated transcripts from institutions attended beyond secondary school.
      • If the applicant wishes to receive academic credit, these transcripts (unless from a U.S. institution) must be evaluated by an accredited credential evaluation service. The applicant must choose a company that belongs to the National Association of Credential Evaluators (NACES).
    • TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test, or Pearson Test of English score unless:
      • English is applicant's native language.
      • Applicant has completed 2 college-level courses in English composition at a U.S. college or university with a grade of B or higher.
      • A student successfully completes Level 4 in UNCW's ESL program.

    Career

    Alumni Work in Fields Such As:

    Assess customers' bodily strengths and weaknesses and create customized workout plans. Provide physical and mental guidance and monitor customers' progress on a regular basis. (Source)

    Direct and assist in the development of performance enhancement programs for designated sports (Source)

    Lead, instruct and motivate individuals or groups in exercise activities, including cardiovascular workouts, strength training and stretching. Source

    Maintain and expand a gym or fitness studio (Source)

    Oversee an organization's athletics, including national teams and conferences as well as recreational and intramural sports in addition to coaches and staff. (Source)

    Establish and maintain a strength and conditioning program for all sports, with the three major goals of improving athletic performance, reducing athletic injuries, and teaching lifelong fitness and movement skills. (Source)

    Provide maximum physical activity time within the class period, teach skills and activities that transfer into physical activity outside physical education class, motivate children to be physically active, and take the role of physical activity director for the school. (Source)
