    HND Horticulture

    About

    As well as giving you practical knowledge of horticulture, this course develops your understanding of the theory behind the practice. It embeds practical skills and knowledge through visits to nurseries, gardens and landscapes, as well as leading scientific organisations.

    During your second year you'll have the chance to tailor the course to your specific interests by choosing elective modules that directly relate to your career aspirations or personal interests. 

    Some of the electives on offer include  modules offered include:

    • Gardens and Greenspace - for careers in gardening and landscaping
    • Production Horticulture -  where you can concentrate on fruit and vegetable production
    • Greenhouse protected edible crop production
    • Ornamental plant production
    This course delivers sound practical and theoretical knowledge of horticulture, and develops understanding of the theory behind the practices.

    In year one you will follow the HNC Horticulture programme.

    In year two, modules cover landscape management and maintenance, and look at integrated approaches to plant protection.

    Elective modules give you the chance to specialise in either crop production practices or landscape horticulture, and all learning is backed by visits to various nurseries, gardens and landscapes.

    You'll also have the chance to see how scientific organisations test seed viability and plant breeding as well as how they carry out plant diagnostic work.

    Finally, you'll be able to choose a specialist project that reflects your particular areas of interest.

    Entry Requirements

    Two Highers (CC), including a science subject.

    National 5 (A-C) or equivalent pass in English and Maths.

    Alternative entry qualifications, such as a related National Certificate, are also accepted.

    Mature applicants seeking a change in career will be assessed individually.
