Human and Social Data Science MSc

Data is everywhere and affects every aspect of our lives and our society – from fitness trackers to online shopping to social media. Data is used to understand human behaviour, and to inform policy, journalism and strategy.

This course is for you if you:

• are a graduate in the social sciences, business or the humanities
• have an interest in data and data-driven methods
• plan a career in the field of data science.

Understanding how and why data is used, and the societal and ethical implications of doing so, are at the heart of this MSc. On the course, you’ll explore:

• modern information and communication technologies
• the python programming language
• probability theory, statistics, linear algebra and calculus
• machine learning techniques
• ethics and interpretability.

You can choose to focus your studies on digital media, or on innovation and policy.

Degree requirementsBachelors degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.0/5.0 or 2.8/4.0.Subject-specific requirementsYour qualification should be in Psychology, Economics, Business, or another Social Science subject with a good level of numeracy. You may also be considered for the course if you have an undergraduate degree in a different subject area and can demonstrate that you have ability with data and a reasonable level of Maths (this can be demonstrated in your school leaving qualifications).Please noteOur entry requirements are guidelines and we assess all applications on a case-by-case basis.

IELTS (Academic)

Standard level (6.0 overall, including at least 5.5 in each component).

IELTS scores are valid for two years from the test date. You cannot combine scores from more than one sitting of the test. Your score must be valid when you begin your Sussex course. Find out more about IELTS
