    With the Human Rights Studies (HRS) Major and Minor, students receive interdisciplinary instruction in contemporary understandings of justice and equality through legal, historical, philosophical, political, and religious perspectives. Human Rights Studies is a dynamic and evolving field and through our program students are equipped with the practical knowledge and skills needed to respond to the social, economic, technological and political threats to human dignity in the U.S. and abroad.

    HRS Major

    • A major in human rights studies requires 45 to 57 semester hours of courses in the humanities and the social sciences.
    • Given the interdisciplinary nature of this degree program, many students are able to double major.
    • HRS is one of the few degree programs that includes a 3-credit hour experiential learning requirement.
    • As an HRS Major students have flexibility in choosing three 3-credit hour electives courses from different disciplines to best support individual passions and career goals.

    HRS Minor  

    • A minor in human rights studies consists of 18 semester hours. Six of those credit hours include two elective courses that from different disciplines to best support individual passions and career goals.

    Entry Requirements

    • Official secondary transcripts (in language of original issue). Transcripts of all previously attended secondary schools, including dates of attendance, all subjects studied, grades earned and marks achieved on examinations;
      • Transcripts not issued in English should be accompanied by a certified English translation.
      • Proof of completion must also be provided in the form of a graduation date listed on the transcript, a diploma, or a certificate of completion. If secondary schooling is still in progress, this must be submitted as soon as completed and prior to enrollment at the University of Dayton.
      • Transcripts may be submitted directly from the secondary school to the University of Dayton via:

    • Proof of English Proficiency. If your native language is not English, you are required to submit proof of English proficiency by submitting TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, DET, SAT or ACT scores. Your scores should be sent to the University of Dayton directly from the testing center using code 1834 or for the ACT, code 3342.

    • Financial documentation. F-1 and J-1 students must provide a letter of financial support and a bank statement showing sufficient funds to cover the first year of study. These may be emailed to [email protected] OR mailed to the address above.
