    Humanities & Arts

    About

WPI's BS in Humanities & Arts (HUA) combines the humanities and arts with science to provide a unique balance in studies to help students understand that science and technology are means to a greater end. With the support of a talented and dedicated faculty, as well as access to several world-class local cultural institutions for project work, seminars, and performances, HUA students will be equipped with the knowledge and understanding of human behavior and critical thinking skills needed to succeed in their careers and in life. While many students choose WPI because of the chance to explore their interests through the 2-unit HUA requirement, students may also major or minor in the humanities and arts or pursue a double major in combination with a science, engineering, or management program.
The Humanities & Arts degree gives you the best of both worlds. In this immersive program, you'll study human cultural achievements to develop broad, universal skills in research, analysis, writing, or performance. While complementing the technological side of your WPI education, these skills and experiences will also enrich your life and enhance your career. When you first arrive, a faculty advisor will work with you to design your own personalized course of study. As an HUA major, you'll also be able to choose one of 12 concentrations, giving you the option to dig deeper into one of your other passions, or explore a new interest.
Project-based learning is the cornerstone of the WPI experience. Whether you translate a literary text for new audiences, develop tools for interpretation and analysis of historically meaningful large data sets, or animate a complex scientific concept for use in a science class, by completing projects that combine the humanities with technology you'll explore and demonstrate the power of the humanities and arts to make the world a better place.

    How to Apply

    Step #1: Submit Application

First year candidates: Complete your application through the Common Application. Make sure you share who you are and what makes you a fit for WPI, and check over your answers. We encourage you to review our college application timeline checklist to put your best foot forward!

Transfer candidates: Complete the WPI Transfer Application. Make sure to also review important entrance and application requirements. Additional helpful information can also be found by reviewing frequently asked questions.

No matter which type of student you are, be sure to use an email address that you check frequently when filling out your application. Keep in mind that many high schools block external emails, so we recommend using your personal email address if you have one. This email will be the main method of contact that WPI uses to reach you throughout the application process.

    Step #2: Request Required Materials

Request your required high school transcripts and letters of recommendation while completing your Common Application. WPI is a test-blind institution, meaning SAT and ACT scores are not part of the WPI application. We do require:

    • Official transcripts sent from high school
      • Transfer applicants must also submit college/university transcripts
    • School counselor letter of recommendation
    • Teacher letter of recommendation
    • Early Decision applicants are required to submit the Early Decision Agreement

    Additional Requirements

Some types of applicants will have additional requirements. Please select an option below if you are a homeschool student, international student, or transfer student.

    Step #3: Review Application

Once you submit your application, watch your email for a receipt from WPI. Check your status online to confirm you are not missing any information needed to review your application.
