The Master of Indigenous Land-Based Education (MILBE) is the first degree program of its kind. Through intellectual and experiential learning, you will learn and understanding Indigenous ontologies and epistemologies in relation with the land. You will use and teach critical thinking as you develop land-based pedagogies independently, experientially, and collaboratively.
This full-time 30-credit-unit program is a blended model of on-the-land learning hosted by Indigenous communities combined with online courses and it culminates with a community capstone project. This structure accommodates students who are unable to leave their communities to study during the regular academic school year in-person due to work and/or family commitments. This course-based program is designed to maximize contact hours with faculty, with Indigenous communities and with the land.
Program Structure
This unique program offers an incredible opportunity to learn alongside a cohort over the course of 7 terms. Courses are often scheduled to align with or be close to K-12 Saskatchewan School breaks. The curriculum is delivered through a combination of online learning and immersive, on-the-land experiences which take place in various communities.
On-the-land Courses
On-the-land courses are typically held during the winter, spring, and summer terms. The land based courses and study tours are a minimum of 7 days (study tours) and a maximum of 16 days (summer courses). Expect to request 2-7 working days off from your place of employment for each on-the-land course, depending on school breaks.
Online Courses
Online courses are instructed by a professor for an entire term, with classes held in the evening.
