MSc and PhD Programmes in Industrial Design are part of the ITU Graduate School of Science, Engineering and Technology. MSc Programme has been continuing since 1989 and PhD Programme since 1996. ITU graduate programmes in industrial design are the most competitive in Turkey, with a 5 to 1 ratio of applicant per announced place. Interdisciplinary and research oriented graduate programmes are open to students with various backgrounds such as engineering, architecture, fine arts and social sciences (psychology, sociology, anthropology etc.). These students are required to complete 15 credits from the undergraduate programme.
Some research topics in graduate programmes are design management, design strategies, design methodology, user-oriented design, research methods in design, design history, interaction design, design policy, design philosophy, design processes, cultural approaches to design, social responsibility, sustainability, creativity, entrepreneurship, semantics and the relationship between design and innovation. The ITU graduate programmes in industrial design constitute a research and education platform which is the biggest in terms of its student population and also the most versatile in terms of the backgrounds of the students. Many designers and engineers working in the leading industrial companies of Turkey and young academics from different public or private universities who are also graduates of various universities and disciplines in Turkey and abroad, are registered to the ITU MSc and PhD programmes in Industrial Design. The graduate programmes also have strong connections with national industry and institutions and international linkages in the context of Erasmus exchange programme and bilateral agreements.
