    About

A vibrant crossroads in medical research

Learn how to effectively utilize biomedical data as a tool for improving lives. By translating basic research into better health care, you can drive innovation in the field of information technology when you complete a Bachelor of Science degree in biomedical informatics through the IU School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI.

This degree prepares you to be part of a dynamic workforce in a state with a thriving biomedical and genome research industry. Youll develop hands-on, essential skills in biomedical data analytics and applicationsskills that will enable you to become an informatics leader in the bioinformatics, clinical, pharmaceutical, and health care industries.

Youll gain knowledge and research experiences needed for medical school, or pursuing graduate studies in bioinformatics, health, and biomedicine.

Our internship option allows you to gain practical experience, and the availability of evening and online courses offers working students more flexibility.

    An interdisciplinary field of study

The Bachelor of Science in biomedical informatics is aimed at students who have an introductory background in both computing and biology. The 120-credit-hour program integrates knowledge from health, information systems, biomedical science, and other related areas.

Upon enrolling in the program, youll select a specialty: bioinformatics, health informatics, or premedical bioinformatics. From there, well help you to select classes that will elevate your skills in these and other disciplines.

    Bioinformatics

Data can become an agent for change only when we have the ability to retrieve and organize it. Turn bio-repositories into tools for research and resources for developing precision medicine. Learn how to utilize genomic, molecular, and patient data to diagnose and treat rare diseases, reduce harmful drug interactions, and repurpose FDA-approved drugs.

Bioinformatics is changing how decisions are made, with focused analysis that redefines clinical practice. Effectively managing the results of experiments using high-throughput screening is crucial to drug research, and genomic and protein sequencing.

    Health informatics

Learn to solve real-world problems in computational biology using informatics. Specializing in health informatics means youll develop skills to enhance research, and to improve both the security of our electronic medical records and the ways we obtain care.

Standardizing data and how we retrieve it has far-reaching implications. Health informatics allows us to access and monitor our own health information, and aids researchers in detecting trends to contain outbreaks of disease.

    Premedical bioinformatics

This course of study focuses on the same areas of expertise as the bioinformatics specialization. It includes all courses required for medical school at Indiana University and most other universities.

The place to grow your biomedical knowledge

This degree is the first and only undergraduate program in Biomedical Informatics in Indiana and the Midwest.

At the School of Informatics and Computing, you can expect:

    • Rigorous curricula: Learn crucial informatics skills to prepare you for careers in biomedical data and health information management in industry and academia.
    • Medical school preparation: A natural pathway from premedical specialization in Biomedical Informatics to further your career in medical school.
    • Cutting-edge research with renowned faculty. Study with experts in biomedical big data analytics, drug discovery, genetics and omics technologies, precision medicine, and smart health.
    • Close industrial connections with biomedical companies and enterprises such as Eli Lilly, Dow AgroSciences, IU Health and Roche offering internships, sponsorships, and collaborative research.

Our students and faculty utilize emerging technologies in projects on the frontiers of biohealth research.

The Regenstrief Institute, the IU School of Medicine, the IU Simon Cancer Center, and many other health care schools, programs, and centers make IUPUI a leader in cross-disciplinary research.

    Reduce your costs

The B.S. in Biomedical Informatics offered by IUPUI is eligible for Midwest Student Exchange Program (MSEP) which significantly reduces out-of-state IUPUI tuitionto 150% of in-state tuitionfor students from participating states.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    • Graduation from a high school accredited by a state Department of Public Instruction.
    • The extent to which the student meets or exceeds the following minimum requirements:
      • High School GPA of 3.0.
      • Completion of Core 40 including chemistry and 4 years of math including trigonometry or pre-calculus.
      • Minimum SAT scores of 550 math and 480 critical reading or ACT scores of 24 math and 20 verbal.
    • You must provide the results of your SAT or ACT, including the Written Section of the test (scores must be received at IUPUI by May 1).  If your class has graduated and a fall semester has passed since you graduated, you do not need to take the SAT or ACT.  Though test results are considered during the admission review, we do not deny students strictly based on their test results.  The SAT or ACT is most important when considering you for dual admission to your intended major and scholarship consideration.
    • For admission to the engineering programs, minimum SAT scores of 480 verbal (critical reading) and 550 mathematics or minimum ACT scores of 20 English and 24 mathematics are required.
    • Because of a limitation on the total number of applicants that may be accepted as first-year students, out-of-state admissions may close at any time. When it becomes necessary to limit the number of Indiana residents accepted for a specific program, students will be offered admission to an alternate program or admission to the desired program for a subsequent semester.

    English Program Requirements

Students who are admitted with TOEFL iBT of 60-94 or IELTS of 5.5-6.5 will take the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) placement test. Admitted students with Duolingo scores will also be required to take the EAP placement test. Depending on your EAP test results, you may take EAP courses at the same time as your academic major courses for one or two semesters. Your letter of admission will indicate if you are required to take this test.
