Get comfortable with hands-on science

If you love science, the Dalhousie Integrated Science Program (DISP) is for you. Youâ€™ll get a well-rounded understanding of a variety of scientific disciplines and how they're linked together. Integrated Science is not a degree program; itâ€™s a foundation-building year in the sciences. After finishing Integrated Science in your first year, youâ€™ll join other Bachelor of Science (BSc) students in second-year courses and continue through to graduation, majoring in a field of your choice.

Integrated Science is a good choice if you're interested in many sciences and unsure which area youâ€™d like to focus on. The interdisciplinary nature of the program also ensures you get skills in field work, lab work and the process of conducting scientific research.

The core of the Integrated Science program is composed of Integrated Science I and II, which are equivalent to two terms of Biology and Psychology and one term of Earth Sciences and Statistics. Along with Ethics in Science, students will fulfill the writing requirements for BSc students. Students will also register for co-requisite courses in Chemistry and Calculus which are taken alongside other BSc students.

Integrated Science students learn on and off campus through group work, hands-on field trips, lab experiments and computer-based exercises. Most students who enroll in Integrated Science in their first year at Dalhousie also end up completing an honours degree in science.

Career

After finishing the one-year Integrated Science program, which serves as the first year of your BSc degree, youâ€™ll choose a major and take second-year courses with other BSc students.

Through Integrated Science, youâ€™ll develop a large suite of transferrable skills, including research methods, laboratory and field techniques, teamwork, critical thinking, problem solving, numeric and statistical techniques, planning, organization, and written and oral communication skills. You may find yourself in any of the following careers:

psychologist
physiotherapist
academic researcher
pharmacist
teacher

Integrated Science is also excellent preparation for professional graduate programs, such as Law, Medicine or Dentistry and for further studies in interdisciplinary subjects such as environmental and life sciences.

How to Apply

Step 1: Choose your program

Dalhousie offers a wide range of programs to build an educational experience that is tailored to you. You can apply for up to three programs. You'll only be assessed for your second and third choices if you're not admitted to your first choice.

If you’re applying to the Faculty of Agriculture, please note all programs are located at the Agricultural campus in Truro, N.S.

Please note: Some undergraduate programs require previous university experience (Dental Hygiene, Environmental Design Studies, Meteorology, Pharmacy and Social Work).

Step 2: Review the requirements

Once you’ve selected your program:

Review the general admission requirements.
Check if your program has additional requirements.
If you’re applying from outside of Canada, make sure you meet the international equivalency requirements for your country.
If English isn’t your first language, check the English language requirements.

Step 3: Complete an application for admission

Three years of secondary schooling is generally required to review for admission. For an initial assessment, first-semester or mid-year results (predicted where applicable) can be reviewed if your final year is still in progress.

To start the application process, create an admission login ID and pin on Dal Online. Select your application type (see below) and your desired admission term.

October 15	Applications open for admission the following September
March 1	For entrance scholarship consideration
April 1	International applicant deadline

Step 4: Pay the application fee

To complete your application to undergraduate studies, you'll need to pay the $70 CAD application fee.

Please be advised that fee payments must be made online. Dalhousie is unable to receive in-person payments until further notice.

Step 5: Submit your required documents

Each applicant must submit an official transcript, however your program may require supplemental forms and documentation.

Official transcripts must be sent directly from the issuing institution. Canadian and US applicants can submit transcripts to admissions@dal.ca and international applicants can submit transcripts to international.admissions@dal.ca.

If you are mailing your transcripts, please note that there may be a delay in processing your application. As our staff are working remotely, we are only able to access the mail once per week.

Your transcripts must be in an original sealed envelope addressed to:

Please note: If you send first-semester or mid-year transcripts, you must also submit final results when they are issued.
