    The Master of Interior Design (MID) program prepares students to work nationally and internationally at the forefront of the profession.

    First-professional program

    Expected duration: 2 years

    Tuition and fees: Two years tuition, then continuing fees in subsequent years (refer to Graduate tuition and fees)

    The first-professional program is directed towards those interested in pursuing a career in Interior Design practice. The program emphasizes the creation of human-centred and context-based design solutions that respond to the needs of contemporary life.

    The course of studies consists of the design studio and support courses that develop the methods, processes, technical and theoretical foundations of interior design. There are opportunities for international and cross-cultural study through exchange programs and design studios. Students are required to participate in either a work experience or co-op program.

    The post-professional program is directed to those who already hold a first-professional qualification in Interior Design. The program has a research orientation and is intended to further the knowledge base in specific areas of the discipline.

    Faculty of Architecture's Cooperative Education/Integrated Work program (Co-op/I) Graduate Option

    Students must complete two 10-week work terms to have the Co-op/I option acknowledged on their graduation parchment. Each term requires submission of a written report and portfolio covering the work completed for the professional assignment. These are above and beyond graduate course requirements.

    Accreditation

    The Interior Design professional program at the University of Manitoba is a recognized accredited program that meets the standards of the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA). In addition, the First-Professional Masters of Interior Design degree meets the educational requirement for eligibility to sit for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) Examination.

    Interior designers emerging out of the University of Manitoba have an established reputation for successful collaboration in the building industry. Areas of expertise in the department include universal access, cultural theory, design theory, design education, lighting, work environments, human comfort and profession-based research.

    For entrance into the Master's program:

    • Successful completion of a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution;
    • A minimum grade of 70% in individual courses or B equivalent in the last two years of study, where a typical grade is:

    A+ 90-100% (Excellent)
    A 80-89% (Very good)
    B+ 75-79% (Good)
    B 70-74% (Good)
    C+ 65-69% (Acceptable)
    C 60-64% (Acceptable)
    D 50-59% (Poor)
    F 0-49% (Failure)

    For entrance into the PhD program:

    • Requirements listed above (see Master’s program) plus successful completion of a Master’s degree from a recognized institution.

    How to Apply

    The application is split into different sections and asks you for your personal information, post- secondary education, a list of recommenders and more.

    If you've already gathered required materials, the online application will take about 30 minutes to complete. For your security, you will be logged out after 30 minutes of inactivity. Make sure to save your progress before leaving your application. You can save and return to your application at any time using the login ID and password that you chose.

    Education history

    If you attended a college that is associated with a university, you should list the university in the education history. For example, if you attended Jawahar Engineering College, which is affiliated with Anna University, you should list Anna University in your education history.

    Making changes to your application

    If you haven’t submitted your application yet, you can change your email address by going to your Biographical Data page and selecting the "Change Email" link found under the Email Address section. If you have already submitted your application, go to your Student Portal, select your application, select application overview, scroll to the bottom and select "Change Email Address."

    Once you submit your application, you are no longer able to make changes. If you have made an error on your application, please email [email protected] with your correction(s). Please include your name as it appears on your application and your applicant ID with your request.

    Submit your recommender information

    All letters of recommendation must be submitted directly to the university by the recommenders. You must formally request recommendations within the online application.

    After you enter your recommender’s name and email on the online application, they must complete the recommendation using our online system. We will not accept or upload paper copies of recommendation letters. Please be aware that helping or submitting the recommendation letter on behalf of your recommender is considered fraud and will result in an unsuccessful application.

    The referee process is a confidential process. All letters of recommendations are provided to the University of Manitoba in the strictest of confidence and will not be shared with the applicant. Participating in the drafting of your recommendation letter is discouraged. Helping write or submitting the recommendation letter on behalf of your recommender is considered fraud and will result in an unsuccessful application.
