International Physics Studies Programme MSc

About

The M. Sc. Program in physics deepens and widens the basic knowledge in modern areas of experimental and theoretical physics, always founding on the knowledge obtained in a B. Sc. course in Physics. Further, in physical and non-physical subjects the students have the possibility to specialize in topical areas of physics. Students can design their M. Sc. course along their own interests, such that at the time of graduation they are specialists of either experimental physics of soft or solid matter, or theoretical and mathematical physics or applied physics. To this end the Peter-Debye Institute for soft matter physics, the Felix-Bloch-Institute for solid state physics, the Institute of Theoretical Physics as well as the external Leibniz-Institute of Surface Modification offer a wide variety of modules and research topics.

The M. Sc. program is research oriented and is concluded by an independent research project, the master thesis.

By teaching a broad variety of knowledge and methodical competences it ideally prepares the graduates for an excellent start in the job market, which in the future will present great challenges with its rapidly changing demands.

The Linguistics masters programme builds on the BA programme in the same field and focuses more strongly on research. In particular, it equips students with in-depth knowledge in the three areas of grammatical theory (phonology, morphology, syntax), linguistic typology and computational/experimental approaches to grammar. The programme offers: Focus on phonology, morphology and syntax in the worlds languages Synthesis of grammatical theory and linguistic typology Seminars on fieldwork, computational and experimental methods Range of theoretical approaches Integration of students into ongoing, externally funded research projects Guest lectures by renowned international scholars Individual supervision Funded positions for students as research/teaching assistants Mentoring for early publication activities Excellent preparation for admission to the IGRA graduate programme as part of the Research Academy Leipzig Internationally visible, highly active scientific environment at the forefront of academic research.

Requirements

Entry Requirements

• A completed bachelors degree in physics;
• if the applicant holds a degree in a different subject, the examination board will decide on his or her admission to the MSc International Physics Studies Programme (IPSP). Admission is possible if the applicants degree is from a course of study which is related or similar in content to a degree in physics;
• knowledge of English at B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (or equivalent).

The faculty will check whether the above requirements have been met and then issue an official notification. This serves as proof that the candidate meets the relevant admission requirements.

English Program Requirements

General qualification for the study programme is proven by a first academic degree or by a degree from a state or state-recognised university of cooperative education. Successful completion of a BA programme in general linguistics. Graduates of other courses can be admitted with the approval of the examination board. When commencing the programme, students must demonstrate knowledge of English at B2 level (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) and of another foreign language at B1 level (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) by providing their Abitur certificate or passing an entrance examination at a university or a state-recognised educational institution. Knowledge of English at B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages; knowledge of a further foreign language at B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Career

• engineering
• optics
•
The Master of Science in physics completes the university education and represents the level of the Diploma. The academic degree qualifies to apply for admission for doctoral work (thesis research). Traditional operational areas of physicists are microelectronics
• construction of scientific and medical devices
• fine mechanics
• chemical industry
• informatics and communication technology. Due to their analytic research concepts and problem solving strategies physicists' jobs away from physics are common.

How to Apply

1. Checking your documents

If you wish to participate in the German course to prepare for studying, you will need to have what is known as a“direct”higher education entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung, HZB),i.e.one that is valid for German universities.

Please check in the databasewhether your school and university certificates entitle you to study in Germany.

• Do you meet the requirements for the German course and does your previous education mean that you have a direct HZB? Then apply for the German course!
• Do your documents contain an “indirect” HZB, i.e. one that is not valid for German universities? Please check the information about preparing for your studiesto find out how to apply to the Studienkolleg Sachsen.

2. Confirmation document

Refugees may only apply free of charge to the German course to prepare for studying if they have a document confirming that they have sought advice. This is called a Beratungsbestätigung. In order to apply, please emailus a scan of your residence title and indicate which degree programmeyou would like to study. Please note that we cannot accept any responsibility for personal documents you send to us by email. Alternatively, you can also send us a copy of your documents by post. We will then send you a personalised confirmation document, which you will need to upload when you apply.
