    An international programme informed by world-leading research to develop an in-depth knowledge of tourism destination management
    Overview A UNESCO World Heritage Site and home of the world's largest arts festival, Edinburgh welcomes visitors from across the world all year round. As a result, the city boasts a thriving tourism industry with global connections and is world-renowned for its authentic and innovative tourism experiences. 

    Edinburgh Napier University has been teaching tourism for over 25 years and specialises in applied, research-informed learning to provide the graduate employability skills needed for successful careers in the international tourism industry. 

    The MSc International Tourism Destination Management programme will equip you with the knowledge you need to successfully operate in an international tourism business. You will study alongside leading tourism academics to build an in-depth knowledge of tourism management, destination marketing and experience design to enhance your career within the sector. This programme is ideal for those with no background in tourism wishing to upskill and move into a vibrant, fast-paced and diverse industry.
    This Masters programme covers the broader tourism sector and is ideal for those with no previous background in tourism.
    You'll gain organisational and business skills that take into account the diversity of cultures involved in developing and managing international tourism. Through lectures, guest speakers and case studies, you'll develop an advanced understanding of the issues and concepts involved in international tourism development, as well as marketing practice and heritage considerations around the world.

    We will help you to develop skills, such as formulating policy and planning for the future, as well as developing your abilities in research, time management and presentation methods.

    Upon completion of the course, you'll be able to devise sustainable policies and strategies by understanding the key challenges and issues facing the tourism sector. You will also be equipped with creative, innovative and practical solutions to enhance your employability within the industry. 

    With the number of tourist ventures and operations in and near the city, you'll have plenty of options for part-time work, internships and employment after graduation.

    Lead academics

    Dr Dina Anastasiadou is the leading authority in EU tourism policy and has published extensively on the impact of regional trading organisations on international tourism development. She has undertaken research projects on cross border collaboration in tourism in Southern Africa, tourism marketing technologies and community engagement in events. Her main research interests lay in tourism policy, governance, stakeholder engagement and organisational structures in tourism. She is currently involved in comparative research in destination management organisational structures in Scotland and Denmark.

    Dr Ross Tinsley is a Tourism Lecturer and Programme Leader Edinburgh Napier University. He is currently interested in the identity and evolution of counter culture festivals and the role of spirituality within such events. He has also researched and published on small tourism businesses and destination development within developing country contexts. His PhD investigated networking between small tourism businesses and its contribution to destination development. His current work centres on the evolution of the Beltane Fire Festival, of which he was a past performer.

    Dr Craig Wight is an Associate Professor with responsibility for research and income generation and teaching and learning enhancement at Edinburgh Napier University. He has led and delivered a number of modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level with the thrust of these covering strategic management, research methods, and market intelligence creation and usage in the tourism and hospitality sectors. Craig is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and is research-active, having authored and co-authored a number of publications on tourism and heritage management in journals and books. He has also undertaken a wealth of tourism, hospitality, leisure and cultural research and consultancy for a range of national and international clients within the public, private and voluntary sectors.

    How to Apply

    How to use the online application form

    Here’s some key information about the application form to keep in mind while you're completing it:

    • You don't need to complete your application in one session - you can save it and return to it later. You'll get an email with a link to continue your application
    • When you've completed a page, click on the proceed button at the base of the form
    • If you need to return to a previous page, click on the save button first
    • If you need to exit at any point, save your progress by clicking on the save button
    • Save your progress regularly, as the form will time out if there has been no activity on the page for four hours. You'll then be asked to re-enter your log in details to continue with your application
    • Refer to the help text at each section of the application if you need guidance about a particular section of the process.
    What to expect 

    We will typically be in touch within five days of your application submission. Here's what will happen once you have submitted your application:

    1. Application review

    When we receive your application we will: 

    • Check your qualifications against the minimum entry criteria
    • Check your references, once they've been submitted
    • Review your personal statement 
    • Check your evidence of English language proficiency, if applicable.

    2. Extra information

    For some courses, you need to provide examples of your work or attend an interview. If this is the case, we’ll get in touch to arrange this with you. You can find out if this applies to your course on the course page on our website.

    3. Application outcome

     We’ll let you know the outcome of your application by email. There are three possible outcomes:

    • Unconditional (meaning we don't need anything else from you) 
    • Conditional (meaning you'll need to provide us with some more information)
    • Unsuccessful.

    4. Your response 

    You can accept your offer by emailing pgadmissions@napier.ac.uk. If your offer is conditional and you need to submit any extra information, like your degree certificate or a reference, you should do this as soon as possible.

    Interviews and Portfolios

    Some of our postgraduate courses require you to attend an interview, or submit extra information or examples of your work. If this is the case, someone will be in touch to arrange this with you. You can find out if this applies to your course on the relevant course page on the website.

    Here are some of examples of courses which require an interview:

    Interview formats will vary by course, and can range from group interviews and discussions to a quick chat one-on-one with your programme leader. You will be given this information by email.

    • MFA Advanced Film Practice 

    What you are asked to present and in what format will vary by course. You might be asked to submit your work digitally, or in some cases you will be asked to bring a portfolio with you to an interview. You will be given this information by email.

    If you're an international student...

    If you're not in the country, Skype interviews can often be arranged by email after you have received your invitation.
