    Introduction to Maths in Preparation for Higher Education Certificate of Credit

    About

    This module which will help you develop your Maths skills so you can study at university. It covers GCSE-level statistics, probability, number work, graphs and algebra.

    This course will introduce you to the mathematical skills, knowledge and terminologies required to study at a higher education level, while providing you with the opportunity to progress on to courses that require a higher level of Maths.

    It bridges the gap for students who do not currently hold the suitable level or traditional entry qualifications in Maths to access higher education. It is also ideal for those who already have a range of qualifications or experience but may not have previously studied at university level. This course provides you with an opportunity to learn the skills taught at Maths GCSE/AS-level or equivalent, as well as introducing you to academic study skills that will help you with future higher educational courses.

    You may also be looking to refresh your general Maths skills as part of your continuing professional development (CPD) or to enhance your career employability and work based skills.

    Access to our undergraduate and postgraduate courses

    If you are looking to complete a University of Derby Online Learning undergraduate or postgraduate course, we will accept this Introduction to Maths in Preparation for Higher Education Certificate of Credit as evidence that you are able to study at a suitable level of GCSE grade C, which will improve your eligibility for a number of our courses, providing you currently hold IELTS 4.5 and meet all additional entry criteria.

    Although this course is not classed as a GCSE equivalent, completion of this course will demonstrate your ability to study at Maths GCSE/AS-level. We recognise that, upon successful completion of this course, you are able to meet the academic requirements required to study at higher education level for many of our undergraduate and postgraduate courses, providing you meet additional criteria.

    Entry Requirements

    • Shahadat Al-Thanawaya Al-Aama
    • Students with an overall score of 60% would usually be eligible for the International Foundation Year
    • UKVI IELTS 4.5 with a minimum of 4.0 in all components (CEFR B1) is also required
    • If you are studying and completing any internationally recognised qualification such as A-levels; International Baccalaureate (IB) or the American Curricula from the International Schools within Jordan, then you can begin from the first year of a Bachelors degree. Please see individual course pages for specific entry requirements
    • If you have completed a recognised international foundation programme with good grades
    • Advanced entry to year 2 or 3 may be possible. You will need to supply detailed information including courses taken, grades achieved, syllabus and a grading guide

    You will develop a range of transferable mathematical abilities through a range of activities and module content that will contribute to your continuing professional development.

    Work based skills

    Through completing the module within this course, you will gain a range of job-related skills that will assist in developing your study and career plans through the use of digital tools and activities. You'll develop a broad range of real-life practical skills that can be applied throughout your career, such as communication skills, interpersonal skills and study skills.

    How to Apply

    Before you begin your application make sure you have:

    • Your qualification details including grades and dates taken. You will have the opportunity to upload scanned copies of your qualification certificates/transcripts in the application. If you have no formal qualifications, you can also state this in your application
    • A scanned copy of your passport or other official photographic ID e.g. photo driving licence. This will help us verify your application to study with us. If you do not have any photo ID, we will accept a scanned copy of your birth certificate. International applicants can only provide a copy of their passport for visa assessment purposes
    • Your work experience (optional). You can upload a CV into your application or provide the company names and addresses of up to three of your employers
    • A personal statement showing your interest for the course/subject. This is a mandatory requirement and you will be able to upload it into your application. You may want to include your reasons for applying for the course, your experience in the field, how you feel you would benefit from studying and relevant information about your previous studies. You could also tell us about your non-academic experiences such as hobbies, interests, participation in any clubs, societies or voluntary work
    • A relevant reference for the course you have applied for. The reference should be in written format and supplied on company-headed paper, signed and dated from either a manager, supervisor, tutor or teacher
    • If you need to supply two references, this usually means you need to provide one academic reference from any recent study and one employer reference
