    About

Founded as the Department of Journalism in 1947, the School of Journalism and New Media was established July 1, 2009. It is dedicated to teaching, equipping, and empowering students for careers in journalism and integrated marketing communications. All degrees in the school require course work in the liberal arts, including natural sciences, social sciences, mathematics, humanities, and fine and performing arts, while permitting some liberty in the selection of courses within these areas. In these courses, a student is introduced to the fundamentals of scholarship in the main branches of knowledge and is provided with an orientation that will help prepare for success in a chosen field. Course work in a student's major, minor, related area or electives (depending upon the type of degree chosen) provides access to advanced instruction and specialized equipment to prepare for responsible leadership in the professional, civic, social, and economic spheres of society and creates a foundation that may enrich character and provide the resources for living a meaningful and useful life.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    • The University of Mississippi’s Graduate School and the Graduate Programs review applications for admission to Master and Doctoral programs holistically.
    • Meeting minimum standards does not guarantee admission to a graduate degree program. The selection process is competitive, and admission decisions take into consideration the availability of space and resources within a department.
    • Some programs may require application items in addition to those listed above. Check the Graduate School‘s website for further information.
    • To assure full consideration for admission, all application materials must be received by the deadline dates.
    • Applicants for graduate admission should have at least a B or equivalent average in previous university/college studies and appropriate undergraduate preparation in their fields of study.
    • Students should also possess or be in the process of completing a bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
    • GRE/GMAT: Applicants for master’s and doctoral programs in most disciplines should submit official test results of the general Graduate Record Exam (GRE) prior to consideration for admission. Most programs require the verbal and quantitative sections of the GRE. See the website of the program for which you are applying for specific information. Applicants should request that the Educational Testing Service (ETS) send official test scores directly to the Graduate School. Applicants for graduate study in business and accountancy are required to submit official results of the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). The university code number is 1840.
    • While GRE or GMAT is sufficient for most academic disciplines, some academic departments require other standardized test scores as part of their application process. For example, some departments in the School of Education require the Praxis Exam.
