The degree program Latin American and Ancient American Studies provides students with extensive knowledge of the Latin American cultures from the pre-Hispanic indigenous societies to the literatures and cultural processes of the present. The program is a combination of ancient American studies/ethnology and Hispanic studies that is unique among German universities. Besides learning methods of academic research and relevant expertise, students of the program explore and discuss relevant theories of ethnology, culture, language and literature. Moreover, depending on students specific interests, individual areas can be treated in greater depth later on in the degree program. To complement such areas of study, in addition to courses in Spanish language practice, students may also take introductory classes in the Amerind languages of Latin America (NÃ¡huatl, Yucatec Maya, Kâ€˜icheâ€˜ Maya and Quechua) For purposes of career orientation or to further improve their Spanish proficiency, it is recommended that students seek out internships or spend time abroad. This subject must be combined with a second subject. Possible lines of work: Economic/culture management, journalism, press/public relations/marketing, communications (advertising, PR, translating), media, book sector (publishers, libraries, book trade), educational institutions, adult education, international organizations and public authorities, academia (teaching/research at universities, research institutions, etc.)
