This interdisciplinary programme started in 1993 as three different Master programmes: Maritime Management, Deck and Marine Engineering. In the year 2000, the programmes were renovated and combined and untitled as "Maritime Transportation Engineering" MSc Programme. In 2003, for the first time, the PhD programme was also started. The students may choose three areas of concentration: Maritime and Port Management, Marine Engineering and Navigation. Considering the geopolitical status of Turkey surrounded with three seas and two straits, it is clear how important the maritime sector is. This programme draws attention nationally and internationally since graduate programmes in maritime transportation are very rare. Through the recently commenced PhD programme, it is also aimed to bring up academicians in this field.
The faculty members are from different areas deck or marine engineering, naval architecture, mechanical engineering, meteorological engineering, civil engineering, maritime law. There is also academic staff for from natural and life sciences, history and economy. The objective ofthe"Maritime Transportation Engineering"graduate programme is the training of qualifiedstudents who have developed research interests in Maritime subjects like port and shipping management, maritime law,marine engineering, human resource management, quantitative techniques, traffic management.
