    About

    Overview

    The Master of Applied Information Technology (NMIT) at Victoria University is a flexible, accredited course, providing advanced training for students with an IT degree.

    Areas of focus include cyber security, machine learning and data science. You’ll build on your computing skills, preparing for senior IT roles. Hands-on, practical classes let you develop and enhance the skills shaped out of theory. This course provides flexibility through face-to-face and online learning.

    During this postgraduate IT degree, we focus on solving real-world problems in:

    • cloud computing (with practicals using Amazon Web Services)
    • cyber security
    • data warehousing
    • machine learning
    • data science through an advanced project and thesis
    • advanced programming
    • software engineering
    • wireless and mobile networking
    • mobile applications
    • data analytics
    • project management.

    You’ll develop new ideas for the IT field, either through a digital-industry project or research activities designed to lead into a PhD. Our experienced IT lecturers, excellent computer-science research facilities, and connections to the professional computing world give you the opportunity and support to contribute original and important ideas.

    You'll also be able to take part in a digital-industry placement program, helping you kick-start your IT career.

    This IT course and its research programs are regularly reviewed to ensure current practice and IT industry developments are included.

    On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

    1. Conceptually map the most recent developments in IT theory and IT applications and justify their utility in various contexts;
    2. Critically apply information technology knowledge and skills to new and uncertain situations in professional practice exhibiting a high level of personal autonomy and accountability;
    3. Design, implement and evaluate applied IT research and transmit this knowledge to specialist and non-specialist audiences; and,
    4. Formulate and strategise IT project management plans which accurately meet stakeholder needs and expectations

    This course offers students an opportunity to do either an in-house industry project under simulated environment, or extensive research activities that could lead to a higher degree (PhD) by research.

    As part of your masters degree, you’ll be taught best-practice research techniques and apply them to projects and theses in our research project areas.     Entry Requirements

    When assessing your application, we consider your education, work experience, current skills and personal attributes (where relevant).

    Applicants for this course will need to meet the entry criteria outlined below. If you don’t meet the entry criteria, you may be able to gain entry by first completing a different course. We call this a ‘pathway’.

    For PhD applicants, we offer a related ‘Integrated PhD’ which allows you to establish relevant skills before beginning your research.

    You may also be eligible for course ‘credits’, where you are granted a unit or units towards your qualification for equivalent previous study or work experience, so you can graduate sooner.

    Entry criteria

    To be considered for postgraduate study, you will need to have specific academic qualifications, as outlined below. We also consider non-academic research and work experience for our research candidates.

    Admission criteria

    Completion of an Australian Bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a similar discipline OR Completion of an Australian Graduate Diploma (or equivalent) in a similar discipline PLUS IELTS (or equivalent): Overall score of 6.5 (with no band less than 6.0 in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking)

    Additional information

    Students who hold an AQF Level 7 (or equivalent) Bachelor Degree in Information Technology (or equivalent) may apply for credit for one or more of NIT5000, NIT5110, NIT 5130 and NIT5081.
