Master of Arts in Contemporary East Asian Studies (MA CEAS)

    About

The Master's in Contemporary East Asian Studies is an English-taught degree programme with a disciplinary focus on Social Sciences or Economics. The programme offers research-focused training for highly qualified graduates with a BA or similar university degrees in Political Sciences, International Relations, Sociology, Economics, or Business Administration. The principal focus of the MA programme is the theoretical and problem-centred analysis of contemporary social, political, and economic phenomena in East Asia. Its aim is to deepen and enrich the student's ability to assess contemporary change, the challenges for the East Asian region and the implications of such developments for Europe. Depending on an applicant’s prior education and training, conditional admission may be granted, which requires up to 30 ECTS credits in additional courses. In this case, the student can also be admitted for the summer semester. The curriculum of the MA CEAS entails the development of three competencies: 1. The methodological skills graduated students bring with them will be deepened and applied to the analysis of the East Asian context. 2. Regional-specific, disciplinary as well as interdisciplinary knowledge of East Asia will be widened. 3. Language skills in one of three East Asian languages (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) will be acquired. The two-year (equivalent to four semesters) Master's programme MA CEAS offers the choice to focus on the Japanese, Chinese or Korean language as well as the choice of a specific discipline (Sociology, Political Science, or Economics). It includes intensive language training combined with discipline-specific modules focusing on Chinese, Japanese and Korean studies. Methodological training is integrated into the advanced East Asian studies modules. Native speakers of one of the East Asian languages that are offered are required to choose a language option different from their mother tongue.
