About

In response to COVID-19, the University of Sydney has reviewed the availability of courses to be delivered remotely.

This course will be available for students to study remotely whilst the Australian border remains closed due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. Please note that some units of study that are not essential to completing the degree may not be available to be studied remotely.

About this course

The Master of Brain and Mind Sciences provides focused education and training for the next generation of science, medical, nursing, psychiatry and psychology workforces, preparing them to meet the needs of those suffering from disorders of the brain and mind. The course will promote interdisciplinary research, encouraging investigation into disease in areas of the brain and mind. The course also draws on the strengths of the Brain and Mind Centre to assist you in your professional and clinical skill development.

In this course the core units of study provide you with an understanding of the link between basic neuroscience and clinical applications and interventions. This focus on translational research will offer you a broader application of the brain and mind sciences discipline and opportunity for collaboration and improved research outcomes. Elective units of study and the research dissertation will then provide a high standard of specialised training in your chosen area with learning of current research methodologies, access to cutting edge scientific research equipment and supervision by high profile researchers.

Our programs are offered through the Brain and Mind Centre which is home to clinics focused on Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, dementia, youth mental health and sleep disorders, all of which are tied to clinical research programs.
The Brain and Mind Centre also has leading preclinical laboratories working on the genetics of neurodevelopment and the etiology of Alzheimer’s Disease and brain tumors, and a strong drive toward translational technologies such as neuroimaging and stem regenerative medicine.
You will be exposed to leading Australian mental health researchers and have opportunities for research activities alongside these leaders in the field.

Who should study this course?

Our students are from a range of backgrounds, including non-medical graduates and range from graduate scientists working in industry or who are interested in pursuing higher research degrees to general practitioners or nurses who regularly have to care for patients with mental illnesses.

Entry Requirements

A successful applicant for admission to the Master of Brain and Mind Sciences will hold a bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification and, where required, satisfactorily perform at an interview. In exceptional circumstances, the dean may admit applicants without this qualification who, in the opinion of the school, have qualifications and evidence of experience and achievement sufficient to successfully undertake the award.

Career

Outstanding graduates may be eligible to pursue a higher degree by research in the courses of Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Philosophy and Master of Surgery (by research) offered by Sydney Medical School.
