Master of Data Science

Data science is a modern discipline in high demand. It expands the capabilities of statistics and computer science to interpret large and complex data sets. With the Master of Data Science, you can develop the skills to adapt to the constant change in data, tools, and statistical techniques.

Your study will consist of advanced coursework, a research project, and a work placement to apply your skills.

If you choose to study a Master of Data Science, you will:

• gain an advanced understanding of techniques in data science—including machine learning and statistical methods, and their uses in the world of big data
• learn to critically analyse data requirements and sources in a variety of areas from the sciences, humanities, and social sciences, to business and government
• learn about working with data collected by, for, and about Māori. You’ll consider how the Treaty of Waitangi applies—applying Māori sovereignty in data collection, transfer, storage, and publication.

Entry requirements

To be accepted into this programme you need:

A Bachelor’s degree with a major in Data Science, Computer Science, or Statistics.

To be accepted by the head of school or nominee as capable of proceeding with the proposed course of study.

IELTS (Academic): minimum overall score of 6.5 with no sub-score below 6.0

TOEFL: minimum score of 90 for the internet-based test with a minimum of 20 in writing

Pearson Test of English: minimum score of 58 (with a ‘Communicative’ score of not less than 50)

Victoria University of Wellington English for Academic Purpose (EAP) programme: minimum final scores of 4,4,5,5

Cambridge English Qualifications: C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency with a score of 176 or higher, with each skill score no less than 169

New Zealand Certificates in English Language (NZCEL): Level 5 (Academic)

NZAPA: English New Zealand Accredited Pathway Assessment Level 3 (with no skill lower than Level 2)
