    Overview

    The University of Melbourne’s Master of Education offers a broader range of specialisations than any other Master of Education program in Australia. We are also unique in offering a travel capstone option, giving students the chance to experience global education perspectives and issues firsthand.

    Our newly revamped Master of Education is designed for a range of educational professionals who want to develop or extend their expertise in educational theories, policies and approaches to enrich current practices in their roles or move into leadership, specialist or coordinator positions. Students have the opportunity to become acknowledged leaders in their field of interest by choosing from a wide range of ten specialisations, including two newly developed specialisations, The Science of Learning and Digital Futures and Innovative Practices.

    The course is embedded in the foundations of indigeneity, diversity and inclusion, sustainability and international perspectives.

    Who is the course for?

    The Master of Education has been created for the learning needs of teachers or educators, from early childhood to post-compulsory, looking to specialise their knowledge in a variety of education fields. It will also benefit those currently in wider education-related roles, such as youth workers, policy makers, education administrators or managers, and those in tertiary education.

This may be achieved in a number of ways, including recognised previous study taught and assessed entirely in English or an approved English language test. If you are from a non-English speaking background, the required standard of English for this degree is one of the following English proficiency test scores:

    Learning outcomes and careers

    The Master of Education offers professional learning for educators in a broad range of fields, including early childhood, primary, secondary, tertiary, vocational and adult. In this course you will develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of educational theory and practice in specialised areas of education. You'll also be exposed to the latest research that is driving change to policy and practice in educational settings worldwide. The course is designed for professionals who already hold, or seek to move into:

    • Leadership and/or management positions within educational and professional settings
    • Policy-making roles and responsibilities within government and non-government organisations
    • Specialist and coordination positions
    • Professional development/capacity building positions in educational, workplace and or community settings
    • Other education and training settings.

    Pathways

    Advanced standing of up to 100 credit points of the 200 credit point degree will be granted to applicants who have either:

    • A four-year education degree, or equivalent, or
    • An undergraduate degree in any discipline and at least 100 credit points, or equivalent, of graduate study in education.

    Students interested in completing a thesis are encouraged to apply for the Master of Education - Research. Graduates from this program are eligible to apply for entry to the Doctor of Education provided they achieve an H2A average in the program, and meet the other entry requirements.

    Micro-credentials

    The university also offers micro-credentials. These are small, industry-aligned and highly accessible short courses designed to help you upskill quickly.

    Developed specifically for professionals, micro-credentials are underpinned by our cutting-edge research and world-class pedagogical practice.

    You can complete one on its own or complete a series of four. These are designed to provide a pathway – otherwise known as 'advanced standing' – into the Master of Education. To use it in this way, you will need to complete all four micro-credentials in the relevant series, as each one is equivalent to one-quarter of a standard subject, and then apply for credit towards the qualification.
