    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the Master of Health and Medical Research, an applicant must hold:

    • a recognised Bachelor degree within a relevant health discipline (Allied Health, Biological Science, Health Science, Medical Science, Medicine, Midwifery, Nursing, Pharmaceutical Science, Public Health or Social Work) or a related health discipline from a recognised University (or another tertiary education institution of equivalent standing) with a GPA of at least 5 (using a 7-point scale) or equivalent; OR
    • a recognised Bachelor degree in any discipline from a recognised University (or another tertiary education institution of equivalent standing) with a GPA of at least 5 (using a 7-point scale) AND a minimum of 2 years full time (or equivalent) industry experience in a health field.

In addition to the academic qualifications required for candidature as described above, the following criteria needs to be satisfied:

    • the proposed topic is appropriate for higher degree research and consonant with the academic aims and objectives of the host School.
    • there are two qualified members of staff holding confirmed, continuing or fixed term appointments of sufficient length for the purposes of supervision.
    • the host School is able to provide the necessary research place, supervision, resources and facilities; and there is an appropriate fit between the applicant, research environment, available resources and supervision
    • the provision of educational services consequent upon approval of the application for candidature will not expose the University to a risk of contravening any applicable law, including any international embargoes, sanctions or controls which regulate the University's operations from time to time, and
    • the proposed program of work can be completed within the maximum period of candidature for the degree.

Applicants are required to find a suitable supervisor and have their research project approved. The principal supervisor must be from a host School for this program: Medicine and Dentistry, Nursing and Midwifery, Pharmacy and Medical Sciences, Health Sciences and Social Work. The Griffith Experts website may be a useful resource to this end. Applicants requiring assistance in finding a suitable supervisor and developing a research proposal should contact the relevant HDR Convenor. Applicants nominating a supervisor who is not a Griffith University staff member in one of the four host Schools must arrange a principal administrative supervisor from within a host School.

Applicants to this program are eligible to apply for a Griffith University Indigenous Australian Postgraduate Research Scholarship (GUIAPRS).

Applicants to this program are not eligible to apply for a Griffith University Postgraduate Research Scholarship (GUPRS) or Griffith University International Postgraduate Research Scholarship.

The following University policy will apply to Higher Degree Research (HDR) programs:

    English Program Requirements

English language requirements apply to International applicants and other applicants whose previous study was undertaken in a language other than English.

All Higher Degree Research (HDR) applicants are expected to have reached an appropriate level of proficiency in English. International applicants must provide documentary evidence of their English Language Proficiency (ELP). Further, there may be occasions when a Head of Element or Dean feels it is appropriate to seek confirmation of ELP from applicants for whom there is no formal requirement to provide evidence of ELP (for example, Australian citizens or applicants with permanent resident status whose tertiary studies were not conducted in English or International applicants who have undertaken some studies in English). Full documentary evidence in support of English proficiency must be submitted with applications for candidature.

The minimum English Language proficiency requirements for applicants to Higher Degree Research (HDR) programs are as follows:

    Only in-person tests are accepted.

English test results must be no more than two years old prior to the commencement of the program.

Applicants should be aware that these test scores are the minimum scores required by Griffith University for most disciplinary areas and that some elements may require higher levels of proficiency.

An applicant may be exempted from the requirement to provide an ELP test score if the applicant's tertiary level studies were completed within the specified timeframe and in one of the countries listed in the University's Admission Schedule: English Language Proficiency.

An applicant may also be exempted from the requirement to provide an ELP test score if the applicant has completed at least two years full-time work experience in an English speaking professional work environment or has successfully completed the Griffith English Language Institute (GELI) Direct Entry Program (DEP) in accordance with the requirements as specified in the University's Admission Schedule: English Language Proficiency.

The Direct Entry Program (DEP) is not available for Domestic students.

    Career

You will be prepared for professional employment in public and private sector research positions. You will also be able to continue with higher degree studies and pursue a research career.
