    About

    Overview

    All domestic applicants will be automatically considered for a 25% fee remission through the Learning Intervention Graduate Scholarship.

    This course has two intakes with multiple delivery modes. Both Semester 1 and Semester 2 commencement is available face-to-face or via online delivery.

    The online commencement offers the same outcomes as the face-to-face commencement. The online course is not available to international students who are holders of an Australian student visa, for study onshore in Australia. This online course is available to all other international students to study wholly online.

    Build the skills required to support the specialist learning needs of children and young people. Develop the ability to create and teach specialist curriculum to support a range of disabilities and learning difficulties. Learn how to implement evidence-based teaching that optimises student learning while specialising in one of the following:

    • Disability
    • Learning difficulties
    • Deaf Education (DE)

    Who is the course for?

    The Master of Learning Intervention (Stream A) is endorsed by the Victorian Institute of Teaching as a continuing education program.

    The Master of Learning Intervention has two streams depending on your profession or desired outcomes.

    Stream A is suitable for teachers who are registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) and seeking a further qualification in special education. Stream A students may already have worked with people with disabilities, people who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) or learning difficulties in other community contexts.

    Stream B is suitable for allied health practitioners, early childhood educators and international students who wish to increase their understanding and skills in learning intervention.

    Stream A is suitable for teachers who are eligible for Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) registration but seek additional qualifications to work as special educators. Stream A students may already have worked with people with disabilities, people who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) or specific learning difficulties in other community contexts.

    Stream B is suitable for allied health practitioners, early childhood educators* and international students who are not seeking VIT endorsed special educator qualifications but who wish to increase their understanding and skills in learning intervention.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    Admission criteria

    To be considered for entry into this course, you must have either:

    • A four-year education degree, or equivalent; or
    • A three-year undergraduate qualification and a fourth-year level education qualification, or equivalent; or
    • A three-year undergraduate qualification in an area related to education (such as social work, speech pathology, psychology or occupational therapy) and at least two years of documented, relevant work experience.

    Work experience relevant to each streams of this course includes:

    Stream A: work with people with disabilities, people who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) or specific learning difficulties in other community contexts.

    Stream B: allied health practitioners, early childhood educators (this stream is also suitable for international students).

    Meeting the published entry requirements for this course does not guarantee selection.

    English language requirements

    All applicants to the University of Melbourne must satisfy the English language requirements. This may be achieved in a number of ways, including recognised previous study taught and assessed entirely in English or an approved English language test. If you are from a non-English speaking background, the required standard of English for this degree is one of the following English proficiency test scores:

    • If you need to undertake an English language test, you must meet one of the scores* below:

    When assessing applications, the Selection Committee will consider your previous studies and academic performance.

    The Selection Committee may request additional information to clarify any aspect of an application, according to the University’s Academic Board rules regarding selection instruments.

    Meet our Master of Learning Intervention student: Leah Manning

    After completing her undergraduate studies 34 years ago, Leah has returned to the Faculty of Education to complete her Master of Learning Intervention. On graduating, she aspires to become a teacher of the deaf in the Yarra Valley, Victoria. She was awarded a scholarship from the Beth MacLaren Smallwood Foundation in 2020, alleviating the financial pressure of studying and working part-time.
