    Master of Speech and Language Pathology

    About

    Speech pathologists work with people with communication and swallowing disabilities. They may help young children with developmental speech and language difficulties; provide specialist support to school-aged children and adolescents with language, learning and reading difficulties; work on rehabilitation programs for adults with a brain injury; support those with autism, cleft palate or dementia; or optimise vocal skills.

    The Master of Speech and Language Pathology will prepare you for a rewarding career in a professional or clinical role in private practice, hospitals, disability support or government. While developing expertise in communication and swallowing disorders, you’ll also have the opportunity to undertake advanced studies on topics such as cleft lip and palate, head and neck cancer, transgender voice and trauma-informed practice. And you’ll have the choice of studying full- or part-time within Macquarie University Health, our unique ecosystem of hospital and health clinics renowned for providing a cutting-edge environment for learning and practice.

    The minimum admission requirements for the Master of Speech and Language Pathology are as follows:
    AQF Level 7 bachelor's qualification (or recognised equivalent) with a WAM of 65; and
    OR
    AQF Level 7 bachelor's qualification (or recognised equivalent) with a WAM of 65; and

    Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission. Offers are made on a competitive basis. Places in the course are limited. Offers cannot be deferred and applicants who choose not to take up an offer must re-apply in future admission rounds.

    For applicants required to take a Casper test, upon receiving your application, the University will advise of the available dates and process for this test. Casper test availability will be specifically for Macquarie University applicants.

    English language requirements

    All Macquarie University applicants are required to provide evidence of English language proficiency. The standard of English required for entry is based on the IELTS Academic test. Other accepted evidence of English proficiency, including minimum scores on other English tests and qualifications, can be checked using the conversion tool.

    What if I don't meet the requirements?

    If you don’t meet the English requirements for your course, you may be issued an offer of study that includes an English preparation program at the Macquarie University English Language Centre (ELC). If you receive a packaged offer, you can apply for a single student visa covering both your English preparation program and your course.

    The length of your English program will depend on your current English level and the minimum English requirements for your course. Our admissions team will be able to recommend the number of weeks required when you submit your application.

    Assumed knowledge

    Students entering the Master of Speech and Language Pathology will have a sound working knowledge of Linguistics. Students may have working knowledge in psychology, education, and human anatomy and physiology. Students may have recent substantive experience with professional practice in a range of disciplines.
