    About

    This new four-year integrated masters course will equip you with all the knowledge and skills that you need to start a rewarding career as a speech and language therapist. You will learn the theory of speech and language therapy, and placements will immerse you in a variety of clinical environments. We are passionate about original research and you will have the chance to explore an area that inspires you.
  • Develop a strong theoretical understanding of speech and language therapy (SLT) through modules in linguistics, psychology, biological and medical sciences, and research methods.
  • Carry out regular clinical placements that will build your practical skills. You will be placed in a variety of settings including hospitals, schools and clinics to ensure you gain a range of experience.
  • Our classes are small compared with some other universities, so you will enjoy more personal support and guidance from lecturers. 
  • Your learning will be boosted by input from experienced speech and language therapists working in the NHS and independent sectors. 
  • Learning from our research-active team, you will be fully involved in relevant research. 
  • QMU is internationally renowned for its research in speech and language. 
  • You will:

    • Develop research and critical thinking skills.
    • Enhance your clinical decision making skills (assessment/goal setting/management planning/outcome evaluation) through case studies and in-class discussions.
    • Focus on disorders of communication acquired in adulthood and related to sensory, cognitive and physical impairments.
    • Explore different areas of practice through clinical masterclasses.
    • Continue to link theory to practice as you attend clinical placements during the semesters and a block placement during the summer.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    You will be taught in lectures, seminars, practical workshops and laboratories. Outside these timetabled sessions you will be expected to continue learning through self-study. You will be assessed by a range of assessments throughout the course.

    Applying For an Undergraduate Course Through UCAS

    All undergraduate applications are made through UCAS.

    What is UCAS?

    UCAS is the organisation that processes applications to study full-time courses at universities and colleges in the UK.

    At UCASyou will find guidance on choosing the right course, completing your online application, tracking your application and funding your course.

    Once you have applied, you will be able to track the progress of your application through UCAS track. The status of your application will be updated with the decision made by your university.

    Key UCAS dates:

    • Mid September - Applications can be submitted to UCAS.
    • 26 January (18:00 UK time) – Deadline for applications to QMU courses*
    • 25 February – Extra opens
    • 4 July– Extra closes
    • July to August – Clearing

    *If you’re applying through schools or colleges, sometimes you will be given an earlier deadline to fill in your application – this is to make sure they can write your reference and send your application to UCAS on time.

    UCAS Extra

    If the applications you have made for your chosen courses are unsuccessful, you could apply for other courses through UCAS Extra.

    UCAS Extra is an opportunity for you to consider another course, even a different subject, without waiting for Clearing.

    To be eligible for Extra:

    • All five choices must have been used
    • Your must have no offers or declined any offers you have received

    Clearing

    If you do not get the qualifications needed to meet the conditions of your offer or you do not receive any offers though UCAS or UCAS Extra, you can look for places through Clearing.

    Clearing is a chance for students to look for a place if they don’t have one. It’s also the final chance for universities to fill any places they still have available.

    To look for a course in Clearing you must first be eligible. This means that either:

    • You have no offers
    • Your firm or insurance universities have confirmed your application has been unsuccessful
