    About

The Master's in Finance programme provides a unique interdisciplinary education in mathematical finance to students from around the world. The programme, which is taught in English, includes courses from financial mathematics, applied mathematics, finance and insurance / actuarial science. These areas are central to research and teaching of our faculty. Ulm is an excellent place for studying finance. According to a ranking by Times Higher Education, which is based on research and teaching excellence, Ulm university is ranked 14th worldwide among all universities founded in the Golden Age of Higher Education, an era between 1945 and 1967 that is characterised by rapid university expansion. In a broader perspective, Ulm University improved its ranking again and is now ranked 140 worldwide among all universities regardless of their age, according to another analysis by Times Higher Education. Through the programme, students will gain a sound understanding of cutting-edge techniques used by financial institutions, consultants and regulators as well as fintech companies, which focus on finance solutions in the digital age. Topics of the programme include valuation and hedging of derivatives, portfolio and risk management, insurance and data analytics. Graduates with a sound training in these areas are sought after on the job market. Digitalisation will change the world of finance, but with the MSc Finance, you will be ready for that change. The programme is also an excellent preparation for doctoral studies leading to a PhD. Special attention will be given to foundations from various branches of applied mathematics (stochastics, statistics, applied and numerical analysis), which are necessary for modelling complex financial products and for analysing data. With the help of such knowledge, students will be able to use advanced mathematical methods in order to solve practical problems. Example applications are the pricing and risk analysis of derivatives and insurance products as well as predictive analytics for credit scoring. Many of the offered courses focus on such applications. Students will also gain familiarity with information systems from Thomson Reuters.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

Applicants for this programme must have completed a Bachelor's degree (or an equivalent thereof) in mathematics or in another quantitative and mathematically-oriented discipline from a recognised university. Applicants with a degree in physics, engineering or computer science are usually eligible. A degree in economics can be sufficient, provided that you have successfully taken a significant number of courses in mathematics and statistics. A degree in business, commerce or accounting is usually not sufficient for admission because typical programmes in these fields do not contain the amount of training in mathematics and statistics that is required for the MSc Finance. The courses in financial mathematics and mathematics are on the level of mathematics programmes. Applicants should thus have a genuine interest in mathematics. If you are in doubt as to whether you meet the requirements, you can send us an e-mail with your transcript of records for a preliminary check.
