The study of materials science communicates expert and methodical knowledge to analyze and solve complex problems in the field of materials science and engineering. Crossing the frontiers of natural scientific and technical disciplines the basic knowledge for relevant professional experience will be conveyed and the students will be enabled to take professional challenges in research as well as in industrial environments.
The fundamentals of the study of materials science comprises basic modules in natural sciences related to materials engineering, and engineering basics to acquire the necessary technical competences. The basics in natural sciences refer to mathematics, chemistry, and physics. The basics of engineering sciences comprise technical mechanics, design, computer sciences, and materials fabrication and manufacturing. In addition fundamentals of materials science, materials physics and chemistry, special types of materials (metals, ceramics, polymers, powder metallurgy materials, composites and biomaterials) as well as fundamentals for materials analysis will be taught.
Depending on the chosen elective modules that can be applied for in the fourth and fifth year of the course, the students may gain advanced competencies that refer to the basics of fundamentals in materials science, and to their application in the industry.
A sixteen-week internship offers the necessary practical insights into process engineering and natural materials technology.
