Materials Science and Engineering (Materials Engineering Option)

    About

Materials Science and Engineering is the study of the mechanical, physical, and chemical properties of engineering materials, such as metals, ceramics, polymers, and biomaterials.

A materials engineer predicts and controls material properties through an understanding of atomic, molecular, crystalline, and microscopic structures of engineering materials. As an essential member of an engineering team, the materials engineer is responsible for synthesis and processing of advanced materials.

NJIT's MS in Materials Science and Engineering curriculum develops skills in problem solving, engineering analysis and design.

NJIT's MS in Materials Science and Engineering is designed for students and professionals interested in the exciting and technologically important field of materials science and engineering. Materials engineers work in areas as diverse as automobile, aerospace, biomedical, or microelectronics manufacturing. Opportunities are available through these industries in the area of research, quality control, product development, design, synthesis, and processing operations. While students in the Materials Science and Engineering M.S. program learn a wide range of skills and knowledge, we specifically aim for our students to meet the learn the following:

    • An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
    • An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
    • An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
    • An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
    • An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
    • An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
    • An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
