Overview The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics (Honours) at University of Johannesburg consists of 7-semester modules and a short written project. The project is done under the supervision of a member of the Department and must be presented as a lecture. It has the weight of two subject modules and is examined internally. Modules are selected in consultation with the Department and may be exchanged with modules from other departments up to a maximum of a one-year module or two-semester modules; for example, modules from Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Economics and Econometrics may be considered.With over thirty permanent academic staff members, our Department boasts expertise in a wide variety of fields, including:Abstract AlgebraAlgebraic LogicApplied Differential EquationsBiological ModellingCategory TheoryDynamical SystemsFluid MechanicsFunctional AnalysisGraph TheoryMathematical PhysicsNumber Theory and Topology. A prospective candidate must have a minimum average mark of at least 60% for Pure Mathematics on the third year level and pass an entrance exam as set by the Department.Internal candidates with an average mark of at least 65% for Pure Mathematics on the third year level may be exempted from writing the entrance exam, at the sole discretion of the Department.
