    Mathematics, Integrated Teacher Education Program

    About

A National Science Foundation Noyce Grant awardee, the Mathematics, BA Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) major is designed for students interested in teaching mathematics in high school or middle school. The course work satisfies requirements for (1) a BA in Mathematics, (2) Single Subject Credential in mathematics (SSC), and (3) an Education Specialist Preliminary Teaching Credential: Mild/Moderate Support Needs  (ESC). The Mathematics, Integrated Teacher Education Program, BA has been approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) as an integrated undergraduate teacher preparation program. Students who complete the 4-year BA Math degree will be recommended to the CCTC for a preliminary single subject credential to teach middle school and high school mathematics. Students who complete the ESC requirements for an additional school year after graduation (24 units) will be recommended to the CCTC for a preliminary education in mild to moderate services and earn a Master of Arts in Special Education.

Students in the integrated program must have successfully passed the California Basic Educational Skills Test (or equivalent alternatives) and completed 80% of math coursework in order to satisfy subject matter competency and engage in solo teaching in middle school or high school math classrooms. Minimum grade point average (GPA) criteria is required to verify subject matter competency and entry to student teaching.

The subject matter preparation component of the integrated Math Integrated Teacher Education Program, offered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics , includes (1) a minimum of 30 semester units of core mathematics coursework that is directly related to subjects that are commonly taught in departmentalized mathematics classes in California public schools and (2) a minimum of 15 semester units of coursework that provides extended study (breadth and depth) of the subject. The degree requires 27 upper division units of mathematics.

The 33 required upper division units of credential courses need to be taken at SJSU.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    1. Earn the equivalent of a U.S. 3.0 grade point average (GPA) or an average of “B” grades.

SJSU will convert your international grading scale to the equivalent of a U.S. GPA as needed in order to evaluate your application for admission. Please note that due to impaction, some majors require higher GPAs than others for admission.

    2. Successfully complete three years of college preparatory mathematics with a minimum grade of “C-” or better.

     3. Meet English language proficiency requirements

If your school’s medium of instruction is English:

All students must take four years of college preparatory English if you are attending a school where English is the medium of instruction.

If your school’s medium of instruction is not English:

If English is not the medium of instruction, then you will be required to submit official passing test scores from an approved English language proficiency test (TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo ). Score reports must be sent directly to SJSU from the testing institution. SJSU will not accept score reports sent by the applicant or agency on behalf of the applicant.

    4. Submit partial official secondary school (high school) transcripts and final transcripts.

In order to process your application for admission, you must submit partial official secondary school transcripts to show your completed course work as well as any course work in progress. All transcripts and documents must be received by the deadlines posted in your MySJSU account. The documents must include ALL 9th through 12th year courses you have completed (passed and not passed). A graduation (completion) date must appear on the final transcript.

If you attended more than one institution to complete Grade 9 through Grade 12, please ensure all transcripts from each institution are submitted to SJSU to complete your application. Official electronic transcripts (electronic or soft copy) must be directly transmitted by your institution via an institutional email address to [email protected].

    Additional Information

If you attended a high school with regional U.S.accreditation (ex: WASC), you must meet CSU Eligibility Requirements.

    “O” Level Examinations

If you have taken "O" level examinations, SJSU requires that five subjects are passed in one sitting or the same year, including Math and English (English as an ESL is not acceptable); if these requirements regarding "O" level examinations are met, the English Language proficiency test will be waived. Certified copies of "O" level examinations must be sent directly to SJSU from the testing service or attested by your school; scores sent by the applicant will not be accepted.

“A” Level or “AS” Level Examinations

If you have taken "A" level and/or "AS" level examinations, SJSU may award college credit if you pass these exams with a "C" or higher. SJSU must receive "A" and "AS" level examination scores directly from the Board of Examinations. Scores sent by you or certified statements of exam results will not be accepted. You will be required to complete four years of college preparatory English and three years of mathematics and earn a passing score of "C-" or higher.
