About the course
Reasons to study
- Flexibility - in our Mechanical and Automotive Engineering subject area, all our degree programmes share the same first year of study, which means you can leave your options open until the start of your second year.
- Enhance your employability - past students have spent their placement year at companies, for example, Cummins, DriveWorks, Jaguar Land Rover, Syngenta, Caterpillar, and Airbus.
- Prepare for your future career - in your first and second year, you'll study through EnABLE (Engineering in an Activity Based Learning Environment), working in small teams to solve real engineering problems, just like engineers do in industry.
This programme is not available to international students. Instead, international students should apply for our international foundation programmes delivered by our International Study Centre on campus. For more information please visit International Study Centre.
A degree in Mechatronic Engineering combines mechanical skills, smart electronics, and robotics with control systems to address a range of complex engineering projects, all with a focus on sustainability, working within these critical areas of Engineering could enhance your career prospects and lead to careers with vast earning potential, allowing you to create the life you want in the future.
Our integrated foundation degrees are for those of you who possess the capability to pursue a degree but do not have the pre-requisite qualifications to directly apply to your desired course, it leads onto our accredited BEng(Hons). The duration of the foundation element is one year and if you successfully pass, you will automatically progress on to the degree.
As a professional mechatronic engineer, you’ll have the opportunity to drive this sustainability agenda forward by getting involved in the design of functional products, from large aircrafts all the way to robotic manufacturing lines.
Why study Mechatronic Engineering BEng(Hons) at Huddersfield?
This course grounds you in the key principles and practices of several disciplines, including mechanical, electrical, electronic, control and computer systems. These academic disciplines are supplemented with the development of your skills in creative thinking and creating practical design solutions, two skills essential to the professional engineer. This course is designed to give you flexibility in your choice of engineering career pathways after graduation.
During your second and third year, you will be part of our programme: EnABLE (Engineering in an Activity Based Learning Environment). This will see you work on projects to develop your technical knowledge and skills. EnABLE aims to boost your confidence, helping you when undertaking an optional placement in your fourth year, or when securing your first graduate role post-university.
An optional placement year is available to you after your third year in the course, allowing you to put your knowledge and skills to the test at sites in the UK and abroad.
In the final year you will work on a selected individual research/design project with the support of your academic supervisor. It is possible to align this with one of the Master's team projects, which involve the design, build and friendly competitive testing of either a road, airborne or rail vehicle, for example, Team HARE, Team Hawk or HudRail.
