Media and Communications - BA (Hons)

    About

This BA (Hons) Media and Communications degree at Cardiff Met is designed to enhance your knowledge and skillset in media and communications, as well as foster a deeper understanding of media theories and their application to the world we live in today. The course is developed in a way that allows students to find their own path by covering a variety of subjects whilst enhancing professional writing and digital skills. The undergraduate media degree is unique in its design with three central pillars that form its structure: media theory; media writing; and creative digital practice.

The theory pillar provides a deeper critical engagement with the media through modules such as 'Meaning in Media', 'Media, Culture and Society', 'TV Times', 'Film Criticism', and '#Media'.

Media writing focuses specifically on writing for journalism and pr and communications. You will develop effective writing and communications skills and will be able to specialise in areas of interest such as sport/tv/fashion/food/film/science. You will also develop an ability to write content specifically for news, magazines and pr and communications organisations, such as news articles, features, press releases and campaign plans.

The final strand, creative digital practice, develops digital skills using Adobe Creative Cloud that are extremely desirable to employers in the sector. Modules such as 'Creative Digital Design', 'Mobile Filmmaking' and 'Digital Enterprise Project' provide a creative outlet whilst developing important digital skills.

Cardiff and the wider South Wales region has seen an exponential growth in the creative industries over the last ten years. It is home to a vast number of organisations employing thousands of staff as well as providing essential opportunities for creatives to build a freelance portfolio. Because of this, Cardiff is one of the best places in the UK if you want to pursue a career in media and communications.

There are plenty of opportunities for you to get out in the working world through placement and extended placement modules, as well as the option to take a sandwich year between years two and three. Our teaching team are also active researchers and industry practitioners who care about your personal and professional development.

Course information on this page relates to 2022 entry.
