This three-year program provides high-level scientific training for students with a background in medicine as well as for those with a background in natural and life sciences or engineering. We are looking for highly motivated applicants with a strong record of academic achievement and a keen interest in scientific research.
The PhD program in Medical Life Science and Technology consists primarily of an experimental scientific project that is performed in the laboratory of a faculty member. The practical work is complemented by interdisciplinary lectures, seminars and practical courses. About 50 research groups from various departments, working with a wide variety of techniques, actively participate in our program. The projects cover a diverse range of topics within and continuously expanding the boundaries of the program's main research areas: cardiovascular, imaging, immunology and infection, neuroscience, oncology and molecular medicine.
Medical students of the Technische Universität München can be admitted well before obtaining their final medical degree. In an attempt to improve their clinical-scientific education, they will be able to follow their regular medical studies and the training within the PhD program in parallel.
The PhD program is hosted by TUM School of Medicine and a part of the TUM Medical Graduate Center and therefore of the TUM Graduate School. All students will become members of the Graduate School and benefit from its offers, such as financial support for international research activities, free soft skills courses and manuscript proof-reading, to name just a few.

Entry Requirements
Admission to a doctorate at TUM requires a university degree completed with above-average results (Diploma, Magister or Master’s), an equivalent state examination, or a Master’s examination at a university of applied science.
Results are considered to be above average if studies were completed with an average grade of at least 2.5, or at a minimum passed with a grade of “good.” In exceptional cases, your above-average qualifications can also be proven through academic work (e.g. publications) completed after your course of study.
Decisions about your qualifications are always made by the degree-awarding institution / department.
A doctorate from TUM requires very good written and spoken English skills. There are no required minimum scores for the relevant tests (IELTS, TOEFL, etc.), but applicants should be able to speak fluently with the supervisor about their research area during the application interview. German skills are highly beneficial, especially for finding your way around Munich and the surrounding area.
More information about admission requirements can be found in the TUM doctoral regulations.
English Program Requirements
All degree programs at TUM Informatics require proof of proficiency in German, English, or both.
Check TUM’s central admissions website for information on accepted language proficiency certificates here.
Please remember that you often will need to sign up for language tests several months in advance.
Should you have no knowledge in German at all, you should plan to devote approximately 9 to 12 months to intensive courses in order to reach the required level. You must be able to prove proficiency in the relevant language for your program in order to be admitted.
For Master's applications at the department of Informatics: if the language of instruction of your Bachelor's degree was English (100%), this can be accepted as English language proof for the Master's application.
A Bachelor's thesis written in English can also be accepted as English proof. In this case a document from your university (
