    Medical Pharmacology (MS) - Perfusion

    About

    Perfusion Science incorporates the investigation of pharmacological, biomaterials, laboratory and clinical aspects of extracorporeal circulation.

    This discipline will prepare students for professional practice in perfusion with a wide range of experiences including: cardiovascular research, systems design and development, cardio-pulmonary bypass,and life support systems.

    Four students are normally admitted to begin the program during the summer (June 1) of their first year.

    Department Requirements:

    Applicants must possess a Bachelors degree. It is required that applicants have recent academic training in chemistry through organic and biochemistry, biology through anatomy and physiology, physics and mathematics through calculus. Some clinical and/or research experience is recommended.

    To apply to our program the following are required:

    • On-Line Graduate application for admission, accompanied by the appropriate application fee ($85): Select the Summer term of the year you are interested in enrolling.
    • BS or BA degree with at GPA > 3.2.
    • Prerequisites undergraduate coursework: biochemistry, organic chemistry, math (calculus), anatomy, upper level biology and physiology, and physics.
    • Clinical observation(s) of open heart surgery while shadowing clinical perfusionists.
    • Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work sent to the program director at the address below.
    • Results of the General Graduate Record Examination (GRE) sent to Dept Code 0216; Institutional Code 4832.
    • Three letters of recommendation (e.g. science professors, lab mentors, employers and supervisors in academically relevant jobs, etc.).
    • A statement from you explaining what you have learned about profession and both why you wish to be a perfusionist as well as why you wish to receive graduate-level training in Perfusion Sciences.

    Graduate College Requirements:

    GPA: 3.0

    International Students: Proof of English proficiency is required for international applicants who hold citizenship from a country where English is not the official language.

    Individual departments may require higher scores than the Graduate College and all tests must be dated within 2 years of the enrollment term to be considered valid.  The University of Arizona's institution code for sending official electronic score reports from ETS is 4832. 

    Acceptable English Proficiency credentials: 

    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - minimum score of 79 iBT (or 60 on the revised PBT with no section score lower than 15).  Individual MyBest scores must also be dated within 2 years of the enrollment term to be considered valid.
    • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - minimum composite score of 7, with no subject area below a 6
    • Pearson PTE Academic - minimum score of 60
    • Graduate English Language Endorsement from the Center for English as a Second Language (CESL)
    • CEPT Full Academic test - offered by our Center for English as a Second Language (CESL), minimum Total score of 110.

    Exemptions: Those exempt from submitting English proficiency scores are:

    • Applicants who hold citizenship from countries where English is the official language.
    • Applicants who have completed a bachelors or graduate degree at a regionally accredited institution in the United States, or an approved institution in an official English speaking country.  Students eligible for this exemption, who are awarded a graduate teaching assistantship from their department, must complete the mandatory English Speaking Proficiency Evaluation (ESPE.)  Refer to the GA Manual for more information:  http://grad.arizona.edu/funding/ga.
    • Applicants who have not yet completed a degree, but have two years of full-time academic study and have taken 48 upper division, graded undergraduate semester units or 30 graded, graduate semester units at a regionally accredited institution in the United States, or an approved institution in an official English speaking country.  Units must not be older than two years from the term of enrollment.  Students eligible for this exemption, who are awarded a graduate teaching assistantship from their department, must complete the mandatory English Speaking Proficiency Evaluation (ESPE.)  Refer to the GA Manual for more information:  http://grad.arizona.edu/funding/ga.
