Mechanical engineers work in almost every sector you can think of – energy, transport, aviation, robotics, pharmaceuticals and the motor or marine industries. They focus on the technological aspect of engineering, and developing new techniques and tools that will solve real-world problems. There’s also the opportunity to specialise on an Advanced Vehicle Engineering pathway. Wherever you want to go, a degree in mechanical engineering can help to get you there.

Here, expect a practical education with substantial workshop activities. You’ll spend time getting hands-on in our virtual engineering lab and with our state-of-the-art 3D printing technology, and your individual final-year project will be a 'design-make-test' project that simulates the tasks and challenges mechanical engineers face. Our course accreditation means that students are on the road to achieving Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. You’ll graduate with an impressive skillset and understanding, and as a valued member of a department with a proven track record for amazing future job prospects.

120 UCAS points including Maths or Physical Science. Visit UCAS for guidance on the tariff.
GCSE Maths grade C or above or equivalent (reformed GCSEs grade 4 or above).

If you don't meet the entry requirements for this programme, you might qualify for the Mechanical Engineering with Foundation Year BEng (Hons). The foundation year is designed to give you the knowledge and skills to progress onto the degree programme.

Academic Technology Approval Scheme

If you are a non-EU/EEA national, you may need to apply to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) for clearance from the Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) in order to study this course. ATAS certificate is a requirement for enrolment at the University, you will need one if you are an international student applying to study for a postgraduate qualification in the UK and it is now a requirement for every Visa application. Please note, an ATAS certificate is not needed for you to submit an application for a course at LSBU and to receive an offer.

The process for obtaining an ATAS certificate can take some time so it is important that you check whether you need one as early as possible so that you can make your application for the certificate to obtain it in good time. Failure to produce a valid ATAS certificate could result in delays to receiving your CAS or we may be unable to enrol you at the University.

The CAH code for this course is CAH10-01-02.

Building your practical experience

As a graduate you'll have a number of practical key skills that will make you an attractive prospect to employers, such as, the ability to complete analytical investigative work, laboratory and workshop techniques and safe practice, and experience working independently or as part of a team.

As part of the degree programme you will go on regular site visits within the local London area to bring your classroom and laboratory experience to life. For example, our students recently went to the National Theatre which has implemented a new system for heating and cooling.

Chartered engineer status

Chartered Engineers typically earn more than their colleagues, and our degree prepares you academically for registration.
