About

An unrivalled opportunity to develop your stage and screen acting skills in the world's greatest festival city.

Overview

Our 2-year MFA is a unique vocational training that offers you a full run in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival at the end of your first year and extensive screen acting work and showreel opportunities in your second year.

You will be training within a vibrant, interdisciplinary postgraduate community of film and theatre directors as well as screenwriters and playwrights.

Classes are delivered by staff with extensive industry experience and our programme is respected within the profession. Our graduates have been featured on Netflix, Starz, BBC, Amazon Prime, Channel 4, and ITV, as well as working at the Royal National Theatre, The Traverse, the Lyceum Theatre, Dundee Rep, Bard in the Botanics, London Regent's Park Open Air theatre, and have been nominated for Olivier and Ian Charlson Awards.

Due to extremely high demand for our programmes starting in September 2022, we are no longer accepting applications from international applicants for this programme. We're sorry that you won't be able to join us in September.

MFA Acting for Stage and Screen Postgraduate Fulltime

The MFA Acting for Stage & Screen is a unique 2-year degree that will reflect the challenge for most working actors today, which is to work confidently both in stage and screen acting. This is a practice-based course, and it aims to prepare students for an industry in which creative problem solving, advanced practical skills, business acumen, teamworking, and self-generated work are critical. We hope to train students who will graduate with all these abilities and can thrive as freelance performing artists across a range of opportunities within the creative arts industries.

Your first year focuses on stage acting. Alongside taught classes, you will be working with MFA Directors and Playwrights to workshop, develop and hone an original piece for production at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The second year begins with both stage and screen acting, and in the final two trimesters you will be working with MA Film Directors and Screenwriters to work on short films that will be entered into festivals around the world. You will also have the chance to work with professional film directors and to create short films of your own devising.

Students will be eligible to apply if they have gained a Bachelor degree with C+, GPA of 2.5/4.0 or Good or better

This course will give you the skills necessary to work in a variety of areas within the performing arts industry, as well as a wide range of transferable skills (confident communication, leadership, collaborative team working skills, and creative problem solving) that can take you into employment in many other fields.

How to use the online application form

Here’s some key information about the application form to keep in mind while you're completing it:

You don't need to complete your application in one session - you can save it and return to it later. You'll get an email with a link to continue your application
When you've completed a page, click on the proceed button at the base of the form
If you need to return to a previous page, click on the save button first
If you need to exit at any point, save your progress by clicking on the save button
Save your progress regularly, as the form will time out if there has been no activity on the page for four hours. You'll then be asked to re-enter your log in details to continue with your application

What to expect

We will typically be in touch within five days of your application submission. Here's what will happen once you have submitted your application:

1. Application review

When we receive your application we will:

Check your qualifications against the minimum entry criteria
Check your references, once they've been submitted
Review your personal statement
Check your evidence of English language proficiency, if applicable.

2. Extra information

For some courses, you need to provide examples of your work or attend an interview. If this is the case, we’ll get in touch to arrange this with you. You can find out if this applies to your course on the course page on our website.

3. Application outcome

We’ll let you know the outcome of your application by email. There are three possible outcomes:

Unconditional (meaning we don't need anything else from you)
Conditional (meaning you'll need to provide us with some more information)
Unsuccessful.

4. Your response

You can accept your offer by emailing pgadmissions@napier.ac.uk. If your offer is conditional and you need to submit any extra information, like your degree certificate or a reference, you should do this as soon as possible.

Some of our postgraduate courses require you to attend an interview, or submit extra information or examples of your work. If this is the case, someone will be in touch to arrange this with you. You can find out if this applies to your course on the relevant course page on the website.

Interview formats will vary by course, and can range from group interviews and discussions to a quick chat one-on-one with your programme leader. You will be given this information by email.
