    About

Candidates in the Microbiology and Cell Biology program at Montana State engage in state-of-the-art research within one of the premier infectious disease research programs in the Northwest. Studying alongside leaders in the field, candidates are able to explore research within the environmental sciences or biomedical sciences and are encouraged to develop interdisciplinary ties in their research with additional departments and programs.

The Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology has three options for a degree: a Master's of Science with a professional paper as an option, a Master's of Science with a thesis as an option, and a Doctorate of Philosophy.

Further your research acumen in microbiological and immunological subjects within world-class facilities and within the Yellowstone National Bark microbiome.

    • Payment of a non-refundable application fee of U.S. $60.00, which will not be waived, deferred, or refunded (See Board of Regents Policy). The fee must be paid by credit card before the application will be processed or reviewed.

Minimum test scores from acceptable testing agencies are: TOEFL: 80-internet-based [iBT], IELTS: 6.5, or 120 Duolingo (We are not accepting Pearsons PTE). Applicants with post-baccalaureate coursework must have a graduate GPA of at least 3.00. Unofficial transcripts can be used for the application review process. Official transcripts are only those which come directly from your previous university OR through a transcribing/translating company, directly to MSU.

**Three (3) Year Bachelor's Degrees: MSU accepts a three year Bachelor’s degree from applicants. You are welcome to submit an application which will be reviewed by the department to determine whether you are a strong enough candidate to be admitted. If admitted, you may be asked to take some undergraduate courses at the start of your graduate degree at MSU to strengthen your background
    • Three (3) letters of reference. You will be asked to provide information about your references.
