Mineral processing is a branch of engineering which deals with areas such as concentration, purification of impurities, and sizing of natural resources generated out of mining activities for use in areas like metallurgy, iron-steel, ceramics, cement, construction materials, chemical industries and energy production. Mineral processing engineering department which is the first and only one in Turkey started accepting students in the academic year of 2007-2008. MSC programme was initiated in the 2009-2010 academic year, whereas PhD programme is planned to start in 2011-2012 academic year. The department accepts students from mineral processing, chemical, metallurgical, environmental and other suitable engineering and science disciplines.
Students who wish to get MSc degree in Minerals Processing specialize in the concentration of minerals and coal, mineral based product development, process and plant design and feasibility as well as in such sectors as paint, plastics, ceramics and paper where the knowledge of colloid chemistry is required. In this respect, production of mineral based nano-size raw materials and their use, development of physicochemical and mathematical models are also of interest in mineral processing. In the last decade, issues such as energy resources and global environmental pollution are severely questioned and therefore coal will play an important role in this process. In that scope, it will be important for the MSc students to train themselves in of clean coal and environmentally friendly processes.
