Mining Geological/Geophysical Engineering (PHD)

Grade Point Average Requirements:

Applicants who apply for admission to the Graduate College are evaluated on the individual merits of their academic achievements and scholarly potential to complete graduate-level coursework and curriculum requirements. A minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00 based on a 4.00 scale, is required for admission to the Graduate College. Calculation of the GPA is based on the following:

• Twelve or more graded units obtained as a graduate student.
• Applicant's undergraduate record comprised of their most recent 60 graded units OR
• A combination of the last 60 units of undergraduate and graduate coursework (2 year, full-time equivalent for non-US or non-semester type credit hours) when fewer than twelve units of graduate coursework have been completed
• On very rare and exceptional circumstances will a student be accepted through the graduate college with a GPA below a 3.0
• Prospective students holding a comparable bachelor's degree but not meeting the minimum 3.0 GPA requirement may still be eligible for admission as a Graduate Non-Degree seeking student.

Students who DO NOT meet the minimum 3.0 GPA requirement with their undergraduate coursework may choose to satisfy their Graduate College minimum GPA requirement while in graduate Non-Degree Status. Students who complete 12 semester units of non-degree graded (A,B,C) 500 level or higher coursework with a minimum grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible to apply to a degree program. Once students have received 12 or more graduate units, the graduate GPA will be the only GPA the Graduate College will use to finalize admission. Individual programs may still consider all coursework when making recommendation decisions for a particular degree program.  Students may transfer up to twelve Non-Degree status units into their desired degree program with the approval of their program and the Graduate College Degree Certification office. • 3 Letters of Recommendation
• Unofficial transcripts from ALL universities/colleges attended (Official transcripts will be required once admitted)
• GRE Scores
• English Proficiency Exam Scores (For international applicants only)

Minimum Admission Requirements:

• GRE: There are no minimum cutoff scores. However, applicants should strive to have scores in the 85th percentile.
• TOEFL: 550-paper based (PB) or 79-internet based (iBT) or IELTS-composite score of 7 (no subject area below 6).  (FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS  ONLY)

The Mining & Geological Engineering Department cannot guarantee that every admitted applicant will receive financial aid. If you are admitted into the Graduate program, you will discuss with your faculty advisor whether or not funding is available.

Admission Deadline

• January 15th to be eligible for first round of consideration of Teaching/Research Assistantships, Fellowship/scholarship or other funding. If you apply after the deadline you will still be considered for funding, if funding still remains.
• April 30th is the final deadline for International Students for Fall admission
• July 15th is the final deadline for Domestic Students for Fall admission

We do not accept applications for the Spring semester.

International applicants may be considered for conditional admission to this program at the department's discretion.
