Language requirements
- No previous language qualifications are required.
- You may only choose one language.
- French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish can be studied either from A level or beginner’s level, with both cohorts reaching degree level in the final year. Portuguese and Chinese can only be studied from beginner’s level, not from A Level; students of these two languages reach degree level in final year.
- If you choose a beginners language, you must take the four-year variant of the course with an International Placement.

When applying to a Combined Honours degree with Modern Languages you will need to indicate under ‘further details’ in the ‘choices’ section of the application the language and route you wish to study using the codes below. Required Score: 6.0 overall and no less than 6.0 in any section

Required Score: Overall score 87 with minimum scores of 21 for writing, listening, reading and speaking.

Career Paths
The programme is a pathway to a range of academic and non-academic careers, but is particularly suitable for individuals who hope to work in international, national, regional and non-governmental organisations, as well as private firms that address global problems.
Students can also go on and work in government agencies such as the Ministry of Defence and Foreign Office, and the Diplomatic Service. We also expect to provide students for Civil Service Fast Stream and similar programmes.
