About

This accredited postgraduate course is for those wishing to further their careers in client organisations or consultancy. It gives aspiring professionals the opportunity to network with other ambitious and successful people within the construction and development industries.

You'll focus on both practical and theoretical aspects of management in organisational and project-based contexts. Management subjects are supplemented by advanced financial appraisal techniques and finance, law is specifically related to construction and development.

This course meets all Continuing Professional Development requirements and provides evidence for upgrading professional institution membership. The afternoon/evening study mode is suitable for even the busiest of construction professionals and is an excellent opportunity to network with other ambitious professionals and their organisations.

We offer different course options, depending on your circumstances:

Cognate version: If you hold an undergraduate degree in a Surveying subject or corporate membership of a professional body concerned with property or construction, you should apply for the ‘Surveying graduates’ route as you will study fewer modules; your previous study will be taken into account.
Non-Cognate version: If you do not hold an undergraduate degree in a Surveying subject, you should apply for our ‘Conversion’ course. Three supplementary modules at the beginning of the course bring you up to speed in relation to Project Management, Construction, and Institutional & Legal Context for Construction before you embark on the masters level modules. These supplementary modules are a distinguishing feature of the course and are highly valued by students and their employers. There is a higher fee for this course because you will be studying more credits.

You should normally have one of the following qualifications:

2:1 degree or above in a discipline relevant to the Built Environment, for example Estate Management, Quantity or Building Surveying, Building, Architecture, Town Planning, Housing or related discipline; or
Corporate membership of a professional body concerned with property or construction, for example, RICS, CIOB, RIBA, RTPI, CIOH, or other relevant body of equal standing; or
A qualification regarded as equivalent to the above; or
A good Honours degree in a non-construction subject and some experience in the construction and development fields.

Applicants should normally have at least two years relevant experience since their initial academic or professional qualification. All students at entry to the course are expected to have competencies in building construction and the legal backgrounds necessary for professional practice in the UK. Evidence of professional study covering this field or of professional experience will be sought at the practice in the UK. Evidence of prior academic or professional study covering this field or of professional experience will be sought at the time of interview. Where deficiencies of knowledge exist, the successful completion of an agreed programme of directed study will be a condition of entry onto the course.

Part-time applicants

Part-time students normally will be currently employed in a surveying or construction related office. Applicants must normally be able to show that their employers support their application and that attendance on a regular basis will be possible over the duration of the course. Students who experience temporary unemployment during the duration of their studies will be permitted to continue with the course.

Interviews

Candidates who meet the entry requirements will not necessarily be called for interview. However, all applicants will be given the opportunity to discuss the programme of study with the Course Director prior to commencement.

Overseas applicants

Applicants are expected to have competency in spoken and written English. Oral presentations are an integral part of the course. Written English should be at the British Council/Cambridge IELTS Level 6.5 or above.

APEL

An applicant who is offered a place on the Course may seek credit for recent prior academic qualification or professional experience. The applicant should expect to demonstrate to the satisfaction of the Course Director and Module coordinator substantial relevant knowledge and skills at least equivalent to Level 7 as appropriate to those modules for which credit is being sought. Applications should be made before the commencement of the semester in which the particular modules are being offered.

Employment prospects are excellent. Successful students enter a variety of roles in client organisations, professional practices, local authorities, housing associations and major contracting companies.

On the course you'll develop of a number of transferable skills in oral and written communications, analytic thinking and research skills, as well as advanced IT.

The department has recently set up a Building Information Modelling (BIM) Centre to provide a research and enterprise facility linking the University with industry. It is designed to foster knowledge creation and exchange in BIM by connecting staff and students with practitioners in an increasingly interdisciplinary world.

The PgDip Construction Project Management is fully accredited by the Association for Project Management, the MSc is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building, and the MSc is fully accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (this will allow entry to RICS Project Management Faculty through the Assessment of Professional competence).

: The Association for Project Management is committed to developing and promoting project and programme management through its five dimensions framework – breadth, depth, achievement, commitment and accountability for career development. It's currently applying for Royal Charter.
: The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) focuses on those entering and already in a management career in construction. It delivers qualifications and certifications that meet the needs of a changing industry.
: The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is the world's leading professional body for setting standards in the surveying industry. They have accredited our degrees and diplomas for almost 50 years.

London South Bank University has a long history of educating professionals for the building-related industries. With roots in London Council School of Building (1904), Brixton School of Building (1940) we have been offering training for this sector for over 100 years.
